Bees Even Series with Cedar Rapids

Cedar Rapids, IA - RH Michael Penn (4-1) allowed just one run in 6.2 innings for his fourth straight winning decision as the Burlington Bees (27-26) beat the Cedar Rapids Kernels (26-30) 3-1 at Veterans Memorial Stadium tonight. With the win, the Bees even this series at a game apiece and gain a game on second place Peoria for a potential playoff berth. The Bees are three back with 14 games left in the first half, including four against the Chiefs at Community Field starting on Tuesday.

The Bees got on the board with a pair of runs in the top of the second inning against Kernels' starter Andy Hill. Jeremy Jirschele led off with a single and went to second on a wild pitch. With one out, Carlos Arroyo hit a ground ball in the hole between short and third. Hainley Statia made a diving stop and threw to first, but the throw skipped past the first baseman and went into the dugout allowing Jirschele to score and Arroyo to get to second. Arroyo was credited with a hit on the play. Jose Duarte followed with a double to left to drive in Arroyo. Duarte stole third as Antonio Sabatini swung and missed at a pitch in the dirt for strike three. The throw went to third base allowing Sabatini to reach at first to put runners on the corners with one away, but Hill got a strikeout and a groundout to get out of the inning.

The Kernels got on the board in the bottom of the fourth inning. With one out, two walks and a single loaded the bases and Larry Infante brought in Jordan Renz with a sacrifice fly to left. The Bees got the run back in the top of the sixth. Brady Everett led off with a double, Jirschele moved him to third with a sacrifice bunt, and Jeff Howell drove him in with a sacrifice fly to right.

Hill (1-1) came out after the sixth inning. Rafael Cruz, Robert Romero, and Tim Mattison each pitched a scoreless inning to finish the game for the Kernels. Penn turned the game over to Kraig Schambough after a two-out double by Brad Coon in the bottom of the seventh. Schambough got Hainley Statia to ground out to end the inning and then finished the game for his fifth save.

The Bees and Kernels continue this series tomorrow afternoon at 2:00 at Veterans Memorial Stadium. RH Matt Kniginyzky (6-2, 2.82) will start for the Bees against RH Nick Adenhart (7-1, 1.36) for the Kernels. The game will be broadcast live on KBUR AM 1490 and KBKB AM 1360 with the pre-game show starting at 1:40.
