Cedar Rapids Kernels News Release
The Burlington Bees (27-26) slipped past Cedar Rapids 3-1 in front of a season-high 4,137 fireworks loving fans at Veterans Memorial Stadium Saturday night.
Burlington got two runs in the second inning off Kernels starter Andy Hill (1-1) then added another in the sixth for good measure.
Bees' starter Michael Penn (4-1) earned the victory with 6 2/3 innings of five-hit baseball. Penn gave way to Kraig Schambough in the seventh and the right-hander hurled the final 2 1/3 innings for an old-school save, his fifth of the season.
The Kernels (26-30) plated their only run in the fourth inning on a sacrifice fly by Larry Infante that brought in Jordan Renz. Renz walked with one out before moving to second on a single by Dallas Morris. Mark Trumbo walked to load the bases, but Stantrel Smith popped out to short following Infante's deep fly to end the threat.
Hill, making just his second start for the Kernels, didn't look anything like the man who held Clinton four hits over six innings of work on May 29. The right-hander gave up six hits and struggled at times with his control, a fact evidenced by his two wild pitches.
Cedar Rapids threatened with a late rally in the bottom of the eighth when Flint Wipke started the inning with a single off Schambough that found its way deep into the hole at short. With one out, Morris reached on a fielder's choice when he rapped a ball to Burlington third baseman Mario Lisson. Lisson's throw to second base pulled Josh Johnson off the bag allowing Wipke to reach safely. However the comeback bid failed when Schambough coaxed Trumbo into an inning-ending 6-4-3 double play.
Rafael Cruz, Robert Romero, and Tim Mattison combined for three innings of scoreless relief out of the Kernels bullpen.
