Kane County Cougars News Release

Geneva, IL - The Kane County Cougars won Saturday night for the 14th time in their last 17 games, beating the Southwest Michigan Devil Rays 8-3 in front of an energetic, season-high crowd of 11,126 fans at Elfstrom Stadium. Anthony Recker and Jeff Baisley each drove in three runs, and Trey Shields posted seven strong innings for his third consecutive win. The Cougars, after Peoria's loss to Fort Wayne, now lead the Western Division by three games with 14 first-half contests remaining.

The Cougars scored four times in the first inning thanks to wildness from Devil Rays starter Jeff Kamrath, who walked four batters in the frame. Baisley drove in his 50th run of the season with a sacrifice fly, and Anthony Recker's bases-loaded, two-run double provided a 3-0 lead. Isaac Omura's sacrifice fly completed the inning.

Shields gave up his first run in the third, but the Cougars answered that in the bottom half when Recker drove home Baisley for a 5-1 game. An unearned D-Rays run in the fourth cut the score to 5-2.

Kamrath gave way to Eduardo DeLaCruz in the sixth, who allowed three unearned tallies. Mike Massaro scored on a wild pitch, and Baisley extended his hitting streak to 14 games with a two-run single for an 8-2 game. The third baseman's hitting stretch is the longest current run in the Midwest League.

The visitors' final tally arrived in the seventh, as Shields (5-5) scattered 10 hits over seven frames, walked one and fanned five to even his record. Joe Newby worked two perfect relief innings to close the game.

The Cougars (34-21) and Devil Rays (26-29) face each other again on Sunday night at 6 CDT, as Jared Lansford (4-2, 1.54) duels with Billy Evers (4-1, 1.72).
