Whitecaps Fight Back on Friday

LANSING, MI - The West Michigan Whitecaps never quit, as Daniel Cabrera capped a career-best performance with a grand slam to break a 5-5 tie in the ninth inning in an 11-6 win over the Lansing Lugnuts Friday night in front of 5,177 fans at Jackson Field.

Cabrera, a Detroit Tigers 2020 second-round pick, enjoyed his first four-hit game in the professional ranks while driving in a career-high six runs. The win becomes the second time this season the Whitecaps have won a game that they trailed after seven innings.

Lansing opened the scoring with an RBI-double by Will Simoneit in the first before a Jared McDonald run-scoring single an inning later staked the Lugnuts to a 2-0 advantage. In the third, a throwing error by Lansing shortstop Drew Swift scored Eliezer Alfonzo to put West Michigan on the board with their first run. In the sixth, Daniel Cabrera's infield single scored Wenceel Perez to tie the game at two. An inning later, Perez lifted an RBI-single that scored a pair of runs and opened up a 4-2 lead. The edge didn't last long, as lefty reliever Jared Tobey surrendered a three-run, go-ahead home run to Austin Beck to give the Lugnuts a 5-4 lead. In the eighth, Cabrera evened the game with a run-scoring single before his epic blast in the ninth gave West Michigan a 9-5 lead. Gage Workman collected a home run of his own with a two-run shot later in the frame to finish off a six-run outburst and give the 'Caps a come-from-behind victory.

Zack Hess (1-5) tossed the final two innings in relief to earn his first victory of the season, while Lugnuts righty Jose Mora (0-2) suffered his second loss. Cabrera finished 4-for-5, Perez reached base five times, and Alfonzo and Austin Murr reached safely on three separate occasions. The Whitecaps improve to 47-53 while the Lugnuts drop to the same 47-53 record this season.
