Whelan promoted to Trenton

(Trenton, NJ)- The Trenton Thunder, Double-A Affiliate of the New York Yankees, have announced that RHP Kevin Whelan has been promoted from Tampa (High-A) to Trenton. INF Kevin Russo has been placed on the Disabled List retroactive to 6/14 with a facial injury.

Whelan was 1-0 with a 4.67 ERA and 1 SV for Tampa in 9 G so far this season. He began the season on the disabled list with a sore shoulder. In 2007, Whelan split the season between Tampa and Trenton. He was 4-2 with a 2.98 ERA in 31 G (1 start) with 4 SV for Trenton. He struck out 68 and walked 42 in 54.1 IP. He had a 2-0 record with a 1.93 ERA in 7 starts for Tampa. Whelan was acquired by the Yankees along with RHP Anthony Claggett and RHP Humberto Sanchez for OF Gary Sheffield on 11/10/06. He was originally drafted in the 4th round of the 2005 draft by Detroit. Wheland played his college baseball at Texas A&M, and started his career as a catcher.

Russo was batting .303 in 41 G for Trenton with 2 HR and 23 RBI. He had an OBP of .362. Russo went 4 x 4 with 4 R vs. NBR on 4/27. He played 2nd/3rd base and left field for the Thunder. During his 41 G, Russo batted in every single batting spot in the order (1-9). Last season, he compiled a .281 BA in 109 G for Tampa with 2 HR and 45 RBI. Russo was drafted by the Yankees in the 20th round of the 2006 draft out of Baylor University.

Trenton begins a three-game series on Tuesday night against the Harrisburg Senators, the Double-A affiliate of the Washington Nationals. Game time is set for 6:35 PM in Harrisburg PA. RHP Alfredo Aceves (1-2, 2.00) will start for Trenton against Harrisburg RHP Shairon Martis (4-3, 3.62) The Thunder will return home on Friday night at 7:05 p.m. to face the Binghamton Mets, the Double-A affiliate of the New York Mets.
