Hodges Wins Player of the Week Honors

June 16, 2008 - Eastern League (EL1)
Akron RubberDucks News Release

AKRON, OH - Aeros third baseman Wes Hodges was named Bank of America Eastern League Player of the Week today for the week ending June 15th. He is the third Akron player to receive a weekly award after LHP David Huff (May 18th) and RHP Randy Newsom (June 1st) earned Pitcher of the Week Honors earlier this season.

Hodges hit .522 (12-23) last week with a double, a home run, nine runs scored, and eight RBI for an Aeros team that went 5-1 on their homestand against New Hampshire and Portland. Hodges is currently riding a season-high 10-game hitting streak, during which he is hitting .436 (17-39).

Hodges became the first Aero with a four-hit game this season in Tuesday's come-from-behind 8-6 win against the Fisher Cats, including a single and a run scored in Akron's five-run ninth inning that beat New Hampshire. The Eastern League RBI leader also drove in a pair of runs in the game.

Thursday, Hodges clocked a three-run homer to left field and became the first Aero this season to score four times in a 13-6 win that completed a three-game sweep of the Cats. The Georgia Tech product also provided the difference in a 4-2 victory over Portland Saturday night in the completion of Friday's rain-suspended game, driving in Trevor Crowe with an RBI single to left to give Akron a 3-2 lead in the bottom of the eighth. Hodges also drove in the only two Akron runs in an 11-2 loss Sunday.

On the year, Hodges is hitting .322 with eight home runs and 53 RBI. The right-handed swinger is on pace for 114 RBI, which would shatter the previous franchise record for RBI in a single season (96, set by Chan Perry in 1997). The Indians drafted Hodges in the second round of the 2006 June Draft. A year ago, Hodges was named to the Carolina League Post-Season All-Star team, hitting .288 with 15 homers and 71 RBI in 104 games at Class-A Kinston. Baseball America named Hodges the 4th-best prospect in the Tribe's system prior to this season.

After an off-day Monday, the Aeros begin a seven-game, two-city road trip at Bowie Tuesday at 7:05 p.m. It also begins a grueling stretch of 30 games in 28 days leading up to the Eastern League All-Star break July 15-16. Tuesday, Akron sends Kevin Dixon (3-4, 4.57 ERA) to the hill against Bowie's Chorye Spoone (2-1, 4.03 ERA). The game broadcast begins at 6:50 p.m. on SportsRadio 1350 AM and online at www.akronaeros.com. For more information, please call the Aeros at (330) 253-5151.
