Wheelers Edge Stormers on Last Second FG

Des Moines, Iowa - A second-half Iowa rally was cut short as Quad City's Matt Denney nailed a 29 yard field goal with two seconds remaining to give the Steamwheelers a narrow victory over the Iowa Barnstormers before a crowd of 11,108 at Wellmark Blue Cross Blue Shield Field in Des Moines.

Both teams now possess matching 3-2 records on the season. Denney's field goal gave Quad City a 31-29 lead before the Steamwheelers recorded a safety on the game's final play.

The 'Wheelers got on the board first with a six yard pass to former Barnstormer, Terrence Freeney from Steamwheeler vet, J.J. Raterink. While Iowa answered with an impressive seven play, 35 yard drive capped by Iowa quarterback, Brian Villanueva finding a wide open Erick McCown in the back of the endzone for a four yard score, tying the score up at 7 - 7. QuadCity's Raterink and Jessie Schmidt were quick to respond by connecting on a long 25-yard score during the second quarter.

Iowa got on the scoreboard again with a 24-yard field goal by Jeff Glas to close the Steamwheelers lead to 14-10. The Steamwheelers capped the scoring in the first half with another hookup between Raterink and Schmidt, this time on a 15 yard passing play.

Iowa came opened the second half with a Villanueva interception deep in Wheeler territory that resulted in an ensuing touchdown by the Steamwheelers when FB Russ Monk barreled in from a yard out, bringing the score to 28-10 Wheelers.

Iowa eventually got back into rhythm late in the third quarter when Villanueva rushed for a score after Raterink's pass was intercepted by former Wheeler Jordan Davis. Iowa's Ken Williams chipped in by recovering Jeff Glas' kickoff on the Wheeler's six yard line. Villanueva struck again when he hit Dusty Kain, who made an amazing catch while crashing into the boards closing the scoring gap with a score of 28-23.

The fourth quarter was a defensive struggle until the Barnstormers with just over a minute remaining as Villanueva hit a leaping McCown in the endzone for an eight yard touchdown to give Iowa a 29-28 lead.
