Wheeler Tosses Complete Game Shutout over Erie

The SeaWolves came out on the wrong end of a pitchers duel on Saturday night at NYSEG Stadium as they dropped the fourth game of a five game series to the Binghamton Mets 1-0.

Erie starter James Avery was superb as he carried a shutout into the sixth inning. With one out, Reese Havens connected on an opposite-field solo home run giving the Mets a 1-0 lead.

Mets starter Zack Wheeler was nearly untouchable on this night as he tossed a complete-game, six-hit shutout. The 'Wolves threatened in the sixth with a Tony Plagman leadoff double but he was stranded on third.

In the ninth, Erie got a pair of base runners but failed to bring home runs as Wheeler struck out Nick Castellanos to put a lid on the shutout. It was the second time in as many days that the Mets have shut out Erie.

Castellanos, going 0-for-4 had his 13-game hitting streak snapped.

Avery (9-7) allowed a run on four hits with three walks and five strikeouts in 5.2 innings of work.

The SeaWolves and Mets meet in the final game of the series on Sunday afternoon.1:05 First Pitch. RHP Cesar Carrillo (1-1, 4.97 ERA) takes the mound for Erie against RHP Gonzalez Gemen (5-6, 4.26 ERA).
