SERIES AT A GLANCE: The Flying Squirrels will seek to bounce back after dropping game two of last night's doubleheader when they take on the Harrisburg Senators in game four of a five-game series at Metro Bank Park tonight. Last night, Richmond blanked the Senators 4-0 in the opener of the doubleheader before falling 3-2 in the nightcap. Gary Brown went 2-for-4 with a double and a run scored in the opener and Justin Fitzgerald (5-6) tossed six scoreless innings for Richmond. The Flying Squirrels held a 1-0 advantage going into the bottom of the sixth in game two. But Richmond reliever Jake Dunning gave up a three-run home run to Zach Walters and the Senators staved off a Richmond rally in the top of the seventh to claim the seven-inning contest.
Erik Davis (7-2) allowed two hits and one earned run in an inning and 1/3 of relief to pick up the win for Harrisburg. Dunning (2-2) was charged with the loss for Richmond and Hector Nelo worked 0.2 scoreless innings to earn his 13th save. The Flying Squirrels went 13-8 against Harrisburg in 2011 including a 10-5 mark in the River City. Richmond is 21-18 all-time against the Senators and the club is 10-8 all-time at Metro Bank Park. The two teams will meet 20 times in 2012, 10 times in Harrisburg and 10 times in Richmond. The Flying Squirrels swept Harrisburg in an abbreviated two-game series at Metro Bank Park in early May (5/7-5/9).
Harrisburg won two out of three games against the Flying Squirrels at The Diamond in mid-May (5/15-17). Following this five-game series, the two teams will meet again at The Diamond for a three-game series August 7-9.
TODAY'S PITCHERS: LHP Chris Gloor vs. RHP Paul Demny Gloor: Makes his twenty-third appearance and his fourth start of the season for the Flying Squirrels tonight. In his last start, Gloor allowed five hits and one earned run along with one walk and five strikeouts in a career-high six innings pitched against Reading Saturday. He earned his second win of the season in Richmond's 7-2 triumph. Tonight's game will be Gloor's second career appearance and first start against Harrisburg. He is 0-0 with a 0.00 ERA against the Senators. Earlier this season, Gloor tossed 19.2 scoreless innings (May 1 through June 15), the longest scoreless innings streak by a Squirrels pitcher in 2012. Last season, Gloor pitched for three different Giants affiliates, Advanced-A San Jose, the Rookie-Ball AZL Giants and Short-Season A Salem-Keizer. He posted a combined record of 3-1 with one save and a 3.34 ERA in 18 appearances. Gloor owns a 16-5 record with three saves and a 2.64 ERA in 101 career minor league appearances, including ten starts. The Bay Shore, NY. native was selected by the Giants in the 17th round of the 2009 June Draft out of Quinnipiac University.
Demny: Makes his nineteenth start of the season for Harrisburg tonight. In his last start, Demny allowed seven hits and three runs, two of which were earned, along with two walks and five strikeouts in eight innings pitched at Erie July 7. He received a no-decision in Harrisburg's 5-3 triumph in 10 innings. Tonight's game will be his third career start against the Flying Squirrels. He is 0-1 with a 4.76 ERA against Richmond. The right-hander spent the entire 2011 season with Advanced-A Potomac. He went 10-10 with a 4.32 ERA in 26 starts with the P-Nats. Demny led the Carolina League in home runs allowed (18) and finished fourth in innings pitched (143.2). He spent the 2010 season with Low-A Hagerstown and compiled a 6-10 record with a 4.23 ERA in 27 starts. He has a career record of 29-35 with a 4.49 ERA in 105 appearances, including 100 starts. Demny was originally selected by the Braves in the 15th round of the 2007 June Draft. He did not sign with Atlanta and was selected by Washington in the 6th round of the 2008 June Draft out of Blinn (TX) Junior College.
WHAT CAN BROWN DO FOR YOU?: Gary Brown continues to produce at the plate. After going a combined 4-for-8 with a double, a run scored and three stolen bases last night's doubleheader, Brown, who recently had a team-high 12-game hitting streak, has now hit safely in 24 of his last 25 games. He has reached base in 29 consecutive games, the longest on-base streak for a Flying Squirrel batter in 2012. During this stretch, Brown is batting .418 (46-for-110) with two home runs, a triple, 14 doubles, 13 RBIs and 22 runs scored. Additionally, he now has stolen bases, which ranks fourth in the Eastern League.
SHUTOUTS: Richmond's 4-0 win in the opener of last night's doubleheader was their 16th shutout of the season. No other Eastern League team has been involved in more than 13 shutouts thus far in 2012. The Flying Squirrels are 10-6 in shutouts this season. Their ten wins lead the circuit. New Britain and Akron are tied for the second-most shutout wins with eight apiece.
THE MIGHTY FITZ: Richmond starting pitcher Justin Fitzgerald seems to have found a rhythm of late. In his last three starts, Fitzgerald is 2-0 with a 0.90 ERA. Richmond has won all three of those games. Fitzgerald earned Eastern League Pitcher-of-the- Week honors for the week of July 2nd-8th, which included the first two starts of this stretch. Prior to his start at Akron July 2, Fitzgerald endured a rough stretch in which he went 0-5 with a 6.26 ERA in 8 starts from May 19-June 27. The Flying Squirrels lost all eight of those games.
