LAST GAME: The B-Mets swept the Erie SeaWolves in a doubleheader last night at NYSEG Stadium, earning a 2-0 win in the opener before collecting a 5-4 victory on Jefry Marte's walk-off single in the nightcap. It was the B-Mets first doubleheader sweep since July 2011. Cory Mazzoni stole the spotlight in game one, throwing the first B-Mets complete-game shutout since August 2010. He allowed just four hits over seven shutout innings. Wilmer Flores provided all the offense Binghamton would need with a two-run triple in the first. The B-Mets took a 4-1 lead into the seventh inning in the nightcap spurred by a two-run home run by Mike Fisher and a solo shot by Jefry Marte. Mark Cohoon left with the chance to win after allowed one unearned run over six innings, but Robert Carson could not nail down the save. The lefty allowed three runs on four hits, capped by a two-run double by Niuman Romero. With two aboard in the eighth, Marte lined a single to right center to bring home Flores with the game-winning run. Ryan Fraser earned the win after throwing a perfect eighth inning.
STARTING PITCHING MATCHUP: RHP Zack Wheeler (8-4, 2.62) makes his 16th start of the season and third against the SeaWolves. The righty earned the win in his last start against the Richmond Flying Squirrels on July 5. He allowed one run on six hits and struck out six over 7.1 innings. Wheeler represented the New York Mets at the All-Star Futures Game on July 8 in Kansas City. He retired both batters he faced in the US Team's 17-5 win. In two starts versus Erie this season, Wheeler has gone 2-0 with a 4.26 ERA.
RHP James Avery (9-6, 4.40) takes the mound for his 18th start of the season and fourth against Binghamton. Avery took just his second no-decision of the season in his previous start against the Akron Aeros on July 5. He allowed four runs on nine hits over six innings in a game the SeaWolves would win by an 8-6 score. The native of Canada has allowed 35 hits in his last starts and has allowed the most hits in the Eastern League (117). In three starts versus the B-Mets Avery has gone 2-1 with a 4.50 ERA. He was signed by the Detroit Tigers as a minor league free agent in January 2012.
MAZZONI MOWING THEM DOWN: B-Mets starter Cory Mazzoni threw the first B-Mets complete-game shutout since Jenrry Mejia shutout the New Britain Rock Cats in the nightcap of a doubleheader on August 24, 2010. Mazzoni earned his first win at NYSEG Stadium and has not allowed a run in 14 consecutive innings. Only one runner has reached third during the stretch.
IT'S BEEN AWHILE: The Binghamton Mets completed their first doubleheader sweep since they took both games against the New Britain Rock Cats in Connecticut on July 9, 2011. It was their first double dip sweep at home since they took two against the Rock Cats on August 24, 2010.
WALK-OFF WINNER: Jefry Marte's single in the eighth inning last night was his second walk-off hit of the season. He singled home the game-winning run in Binghamton's 1-0 win over the Trenton Thunder on May 16.
WE MEET AGAIN: Starters Zack Wheeler and James Avery meet for the second time this season. The two matched up against each other on June 25 at Jerry Uht Park. Wheeler allowed five runs on eight hits over seven innings to earn the win. Avery was tagged for eight runs on 13 hits in the loss.
WELCOME BACK: In his first game of the year with the B-Mets, Mike Fisherripped a two-run homer in the nightcap yesterday. It was his first home run since he went deep as a Buffalo Bison (AAA) on June 3, 2011. Fisher hit .169 in 30 games with the Bisons before being transferred to the B-Mets on July 12. Fisher is in his third season with Binghamton. He hit .290 in 56 games with the B-Mets last season.
