Wheaties prepare for holiday season

Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Brandon, Manitoba - The holiday season is here and the Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings will certainly be busy over the course of the next week, doing their part in helping make the season brighter for those less fortunate throughout western Manitoba.

The Wheat Kings, who will close out a 3-game Alberta road trip Wednesday night in Red Deer against the Rebels, will return home Friday to kick off a 3-game home stand to close out their pre-Christmas schedule. Fans attending Friday night's game against the defending champion Medicine Hat Tigers are encouraged to bring a can of Campbells Soup or a new, unwrapped book as part of CIBC's Read to Succeed campaign. All goods collected will then be donated to both Helping Hands and the Christmas Cheer Board.

On Sunday night, the Wheat Kings and Juggernaut Computers have teamed up in an effort to assist the Westman & Area Traditional Christmas Dinner. The WHL club helped to kick off the Dinner Toy Drive earlier this week when Mark Derlago turned up at the Richmond Avenue McDonalds to make the first donations of this year's campaign, which runs throughout the week.

All fans donating a new, unwrapped toy or non-perishable food item at Sunday's game, which is also the first Rain Check Night of the 2004-2005 campaign, will be entered to win a new Olympus digital camera, valued at $200.

The Christmas Dinner has been held for the past nineteen years in Brandon. The first one, which was organized by former Wheat King bench boss Rocky Addison, was attended by thirty people and was held in a small church at the corner of 8th Street and Victoria Avenue. The Dinner quickly outgrew the capacity of the church and was moved to the Prairie Oasis Centre. Six years ago, the number of people attending grew to a point where it had to be moved to a larger facility. Since that time, the event has been held in the Keystone Centre. Last year, over 1,500 meals were delivered while another two thousand were served to those that attended.

The Wheat Kings will close out this home stand on Friday, December 17th against the visiting Red Deer Rebels - a game that will feature the 8th Annual McDonalds Teddy Bear Toss. Fans attending next week's game are being encouraged to bring a stuffed animal to the game and when the Wheat Kings score their first goal of the night, fans will be able to "Toss their Teddy" to the ice below. All plush toys collected will be donated to the Christmas Cheer Board.
