Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba -- Three current members and one of the Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings brightest prospects highlight the list of players chosen to play for Team Western at this year's World Under 17 Challenge, to be held over the Christmas holidays in London, Ontario.
16-year old blueliner Brodie Melnychuk (Balgonie, Saskatchewan) and forwards (pictured player on front) Brayden Schenn (Saskatoon) and Scott Glennie (Winnipeg) will be joined by goalkeeper Graham Hildebrand.
The Under 17 Challenge is an annual event showcasing some of the best young hockey talent in the world. Canada's entries are regional teams from all areas of Canada. The Under-17 program is the first step of the Program of Excellence. The Program of Excellence is a high performance program that is based on a progressive model that begins in the branches at the U17 to continue at the national level with the U18 and National Junior Teams.
Canada's five teams will be joined by national teams from Finland, Slovakia, Germany, Russia and the USA at the event.
Entering Tuesday night's game against the Blades in Saskatoon, Schenn, the Wheat Kings' first pick in the 2006 Western Hockey League bantam draft leads all WHL rookies in scoring with six goals and 17 points in 21 games. Glennie meanwhile leads all first year players in the league with ten goals while Melnychuk has four assists and has registered an imrpessive +4 ranking in sixteen games. Glennie and Melnychuk were Brandon's second and third round picks in last year's bantam draft.
A 16-year old native of Saskatoon, Hildebrand is currently tending goal for the Beardys Blackhawks of the Saskatchewan AAA Midget Hockey League and in twelve games this season, he's compiled a brilliant 1.85 goals against average and a .935 save percentage.
The Wheat Kings will be kicking off a 3-game road trip Tuesday night. Brandon will travel to Prince Albert on Wednesday before taking on the Broncos in Swift Current on Friday night. They will then return home to host the Moose Jaw Warriors on Saturday night at Westman Place. Brandon is currently sitting third in the WHL's Eastern Division with a record of 13-7-0-1, good for 27 points - one back of the Broncos and just three behind the Eastern Conference leading Regina Pats.
