Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

Medicine Hat, Alberta -- The Brandon Wheat Kings closed out what turned out to be a successful 3-game Western Hockey League road trip Wednesday night with an impressive 4-1 victory over the Tigers in Medicine Hat.

With the win, Brandon improved its record to 41-16-3-1 on the season. Winners of eight of their last nine games, the Wheat Kings have moved to within four points of the Eastern Division leading Saskatoon Blades, with a game in hand. Saskatoon was a 5-1 loser to the league leading Hitmen in Calgary Wednesday night.

After having its 5-game win streak snapped last Friday against Calgary, the second place Wheat Kings got back on track during this week's road trip. After beating the Raiders in Prince Albert on Sunday, the Wheat Kings dumped Swift Current 4-2 on Tuesday, before defeating the Tigers on Wednesday.

In Wednesday's game, 19-year old Hartney product Del Cowan scored twice as Brandon erased a 1-0 deficit with four unsanswered goals. Nathan Green and rookie Mark Stone also scored for the Wheat Kings, who outshot the Tigers 30-24.

Veteran netminder Andrew Hayes picked up the win between the pipes, improving his record to 25-9-2 and his goals against average to 3.00. Former Kamloops Blazer James Priestner meanwhile picked up back to back victories against Prince Albert and Swift Current during the first two games of this week's road trip.

The Wheat Kings return to Brandon on Thursday and will begin preparations on what will be a critical 4-game homestand that kicks off Saturday night against the Broncos.

Brandon's homestand continues next week with games on Wednesday night against Lethbridge and a 2-game weekend series - February 27th and 28th - against the Blades.

Tickets for all four games are on sale now at the Keystone Centre box office, by calling 726-3555 or online at ticketmaster.ca

Saturday's game vs. Swift Current is also another Source for Sports - Subway Family Night. The Wheat Kings' Family package includes 2 adult and 2 youth tickets, 4 6" Subway sandwiches, 4 Coca Colas and 4 souvenir programs for just $40 plus GST.
