Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Brandon, Manitoba -- The Brandon Wheat Kings have announced the acquisition of a hometown 30-goal scorer on the eve of the Western Hockey League's annual Christmas roster freeze that runs through December 27th.
Brandon general manager and head coach Kelly McCrimmon obtained 19-year old left-winger Shayne Wiebe from the Kamloops Blazers on Sunday in exchange for 17-year old rookie Jordan DePape.
A three year WHL veteran, Wiebe is averaging close to a point per game this season and is coming off an outstanding 2008-09 campaign that saw the Brandon product score 32 goals and 65 points in 72 games. In 32 games this year, the 5'11" 188 lb. Wiebe has fourteen goals and 25 points.
During his three years in Kamloops, Wiebe has scored 55 goals and 107 points in 170 games. As well, the gritty forward has accumulated 193 minutes in penalties.
In eight playoff games with the Blazers, the former AAA Midget Wheat King has two assists and 8 penalty minutes.
"Shayne will be an important addition to our team," says McCrimmon. "He brings experience, a high skill level as well as the grit and character we need to compete in the second half of our season and in the playoffs."
In dealing DePape, the Wheat Kings are moving a former Manitoba Junior Hockey League Rookie of the Year who was off to a good start in this, his first WHL season.
"As you would expect, we are paying a high price in trading Jordan," McCrimmon went on to say. "He is a tremendous young player that is going to be a great player in our league. We wish him nothing but the best."
In 22 games this season, the former third round bantam draft choice of the Wheat Kings has four goals and 8 points. As a member of the MJHL's Winnipeg Saints in 2008-09, the Winnipeg native had 85 points including 35 goals.
Wiebe will arrive in Brandon this week and is expected make his Wheat King debut this coming weekend when the Wheat Kings take on the Moose Jaw Warriors in a home and home series, beginning Friday night at the Crushed Can.
The Wheat Kings will go into the weekend series having won six straight games and ten of their last 11 to move into a first place tie with the Saskatoon Blades atop the WHL's Eastern Division. Saturday's game at Westman Place will bring the curtain down on Brandon's pre-Christmas schedule.
The WHL's Christmas roster freeze begins Tuesday.
