Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
REGINA, SK - Excitement and sense of anticipation was in the air Regina as players began arriving for Hockey Canada's National Junior Selection Camp.
Thirty-five players including two members of the Western Hockey League's Brandon Wheat Kings will be battling one another at a selection camp beginning Sunday to pick the 22-man roster for the world juniors that begin Dec. 26 in Regina and Saskatoon.
Schenn was one of Canada's final cuts last season, despite being only 17 years of age. With Team Canada playing its games in Saskatoon this year, he's determined to make the most of his second chance.
'I guess desparate is a good word," the Saskatoon product told James Shewaga of the Brandon Sun following Brandon's 8-4 victory over the Kelowna Rockets, "but I'm going to take it as a challenge and go there and compete for a spot. It being in your hometown, it makes you maybe a little more determined but I don't know how much more determined you can get because the world juniors are something special...but being cut last years, it's not a good feeling, so I am going there ready to play my game and compete for a spot."
Glennie meanwhile was not invited to the 2008 selection camp but his strong play over the course of the past year forced him onto Hockey Canada's radar.
"Im really excited," Glennie told the Sun this week. "It's something that I've dreamed about my whole life and right now I'm just going there to work as hard as I can and try to make the most of the opportunity and try to make the team."
Should one or both players make Team Canada, it will mark the second straight season that the Wheat Kings have been represented on the National Junior Team. Last winter, it was captain Keith Aulie who helped the Canadian team win the gold medal in Ottawa.
Without Schenn or Glennie in the lineup, the Wheat Kings continued their winning ways on Saturday, beating the visiting Edmonton Oil Kings 4-2 at Westman Place and running their winning streak to six games. Veteran Aaron Lewadniuk scored the game winner with just over three minutes remaining in regulation time as the Wheat Kings won for tenth time in their last 11 games to remain tied with Saskatoon atop the Eastern Division.
Canada's camp began with workouts Saturday followed by intrasquad games Sunday and Monday and an exhibition game against a team of university players on Tuesday night. The 22-man roster is to be announced on Wednesday.
As in the past, Canada will be missing some of its most gifted players who remain eligible for the tournament but who have been kept by their NHL clubs. They include John Tavares of the New York Islanders, Steven Stamkos of the Tampa Bay Lightning, Matt Duchene and Ryan O'Reilly of the Colorado Avalanche, Evander Kane of the Atlanta Thrashers and Michael Del Zotto of the New York Rangers.
Schenn and Glennie are among ten WHLers at this year's camp. Among the others are Regina's Jordan Eberle and Colton Teubert, who were both members of last year's gold medal winning squad.
