Edmonton Oil Kings News Release
Edmonton, AB.: It was Stuff the Bus for Edmonton's Food Bank at the Oil Kings Thanksgiving Matinee with the Brandon Wheat Kings. While the fans were charitable, the visitors were anything but, scoring every period and two in the third to stuff it to the Oil Kings 4-1. The win stopped a three game losing streak for the Wheat Kings, while the Oil Kings home record slipped to 2-2-0-0.
"I thought we had a good start but it seems to be our signature that we get a power play and lose momentum," said Head Coach Steve Pleau. "You work to get on the man advantage and you've got to keep the momentum. They took the game over and they are skilled but I think it was more our undoing in certain situations."
The Wheat Kings opened the scoring half way through an entertaining first period when Jay Fehr converted a difficult one timer from close to the goal line. Fehr was able to squeeze it by Oil Kings starter Torrie Jung before he could get across to the post.
The second period started with some rough stuff when Oil Kings rookie Keegan Lowe was run over at center ice by Klarc Wilson. Edmonton's Tomas Vincour jumped in to defend his team mate and had a spirited tilt with Wilson, an Edmonton boy. The Wheat Kings grabbed a two goal lead with a power play goal five minutes in. Alexander Urbom cruised through the slot and found Matt Calvert back across the grain for the goal mouth tap in. Later, Brandon is awarded a penalty shot when Drew Nichol hauled down Jordan Hale on a breakaway. Torrie Jung was aggressive and challenged Hale and stopped his shot to keep it at 2-0. The Wheat Kings dominated the period outshooting Edmonton 10-3.
The Oil Kings got some life in the third period when Vincour circled the net and beat the Wheat Kings Andrew Hayes, a Sherwood Park native, short side to make it 2-1. The Wheat Kings got their two goal cushion back when Brayden Schenn scored his first goal of the season. Brandon added another goal late from Michael Ferland and won 4-1. The Oil Kings record is now 5-3-0-2, while the Wheat Kings are now over 500 at 5-4-0-1.
The Oil Kings four game home stand continues Thursday, October 15th at 7:00 pm against the Portland Winterhawks. It will be the only visit to Rexall Place this season for the US Divisions number one team. It is also the first Thirsty Thursday of the year where fans can enjoy a 12 ounce pop for $1, all night long, at any concession. The Oil Kings wrap up their four games at home next weekend. They host the Swift Current Broncos on Celebrity Saturday and then the Saskatoon Blades are in town for Signature Sunday.
