Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
Prince George, B.C. - The Brandon Wheat Kings snapped a 5-game losing streak Tuesday night with a 5-4 come from behind victory over the Cougars in Prince George.
The Wheat Kings scored three unanswered second period goals to wipe out a 3-1 first period deficit to improve to 7-3-3-2 on the season and 1-2-1-1 on their season high 7-game road trip out west.
Captain Stelio Mattheos led the winners with a goal and four points while veteran Linden McCorrister added a goal and two assists.
Brandon coach David Anning says it was good to get the win after playing so well of late and not being rewarded for it.
"I thought we weren't at our best tonight...I thought we had played a little bit better," Anning told Chris Jaster of the Brandon Sun after the game. "We made some mental mistakes tonight, but we found a way to get the job done. Credit to our guys. We found ourselves down 3-1 because of some mental mistakes in the first period. I thought we had a great response and really took over the game in the second by cleaning up our game a little bit and being a little bit harder."
Luka Burzan, Connor Gutenberg and defenceman Braden Schneider rounded out the scoring for the Wheat Kings, who outshot the Cougars 44-30.
For rookie netminder Ethan Kruger, who made 26 saves including a couple in the third when Prince George cut the lead to one and pushed hard for the equalizer, it was his first ever Western Hockey League win.
After scoring seven goals through the first four games of this trip, Anning says it was nice to finally see the pucks go in.
"We needed to get to the inside a little bit more," he told the Sun. "We've been shooting the puck relatively well and we needed some puck luck as well. Tonight we scored on a variety of different looks and opportunities. We shot the puck well, we had traffic going to the net, we scored on a rebound goal in the second period."
Brandon will now have two days off before closing out the trip with back to back games this weekend against Kamloops and Kelowna on Friday and Saturday nights respectively.
The Wheat Kings will then return home to host the Central Division leading Red Deer Rebels on Friday, November 9th, in a game to be presented by Assiniboine Community College.
