SPOKANE, Wash. - In their first meeting of the season, the Spokane Chiefs skated to a 4-1 win over the Seattle Thunderbirds on Tuesday night in the Spokane Arena. Riley Woods scored twice and the Chiefs were 2-5 on the power play in their third of five straight games at home, all against U.S. Division opponents.

Things stayed scoreless throughout most of the first period, which featured the Thunderbirds fending off a four minute Spokane power play that was the result of a high sticking call against Seattle forward Jake Lee. Just when it looked like things would be headed into the first intermission without a score, Chiefs winger Jake McGrew put a soft net-front backhander through the five hole of Seattle goaltender Liam Hughes to make it 1-0 Spokane. The period's lone goal at the 18:58 mark put the Chiefs on top 1-0. Ty Smith was credited with his first of three assists on the night.

The action-packed second period saw the Chiefs and Thunderbirds each send five players to the penalty box. Spokane went up 2-0 on Riley Wood's fourth power play goal of the season at the 7:59 mark, with assists from Zummack and Smith. Seattle went 0-2 on the power play this period, but managed to cut the lead in half when left-winger Dillon Hamaliuk punched in the rebound of a Bailey Brkin save. Hamaliuk's eighth goal of the season brought the Thunderbirds within one goal of the Chiefs through 40-minutes.

The Chiefs would score the only two goals of the third including Woods' second of the night, and 10th of the year, with a wrist shot on the power play from the right wing at 6:20. Defenseman Egor Arbuzov scored his first career WHL goal after skating through traffic to force the puck out of the Chiefs' zone and firing it into an empty net.

Brkin earned third star honors after stopping 22 shots in 23 chances. Liam Hughes had 28 saves for Seattle. The Chiefs were 3-3 on the penalty kill.
