Wheat Kings Add Forward Michels in Swap with Regina
November 13, 2023 - Western Hockey League (WHL)
Brandon Wheat Kings News Release
The Brandon Wheat Kings have added some extra forward depth to their lineup in a swap with the Regina Pats. And they know firsthand just how much speed and tenacity their newest forward brings to the table.
In a one-for-one player swap with the Pats, the Wheat Kings have added 2005-born forward Matteo Michels to their roster. Going back the other way is 2005-born forward Anthony Wilson.
"Matteo brins speed and skill to our lineup," said Wheat Kings head coach and GM Marty Murray. "He can play anywhere in the lineup and plays in all situations. He's been consistent throughout the season, and has been noticeable in the games we've played against Regina this season."
Michels has indeed been noticeable against the Wheat Kings, from his shorthanded goal against the Wheat Kings on opening night (and another goal in that same contest) to his setup of Parker Berge for a goal in Brandon on Saturday, November 11. Overall, Michels has posted five goals and 11 points in 20 games this season.
Originally a first-round pick, 18th overall, in the inaugural U.S. Priority Draft in 2020, Michels was the first player from that selection process to make his way to the WHL as a 16-year-old in 2021-22. He has since played in 115 games (all with the Pats) posting a total of seven goals and 16 assists for 23 points.
Wilson, a native of Swift Current, was acquired last season from the Victoria Royals and has played 56 games in a Brandon sweater since. This season, he posted two goals and six assists for eight points in 16 games.
The Wheat Kings would like to wish Anthony Wilson the best of luck in his future endeavors in hockey and beyond.
Up next for the Wheat Kings is a two-game homestand against the Edmonton Oil Kings and Medicine Hat Tigers on Friday November 17 and Saturday November 18.
