Silvertips' Penalty Kill Makes History with Three-Goal Night

EVERETT, Wash. - The Everett Silvertips' penalty kill became a power kill Saturday night, setting a franchise record by scoring three goals in a single game against the Vancouver Giants.

Everett had scored multiple shorthanded goals in a single game seven times before in their franchise history, most recently netting two on Oct. 27, 2018 at Swift Current. It had been nearly 13 years since multiple shorthanded goals were scored on home ice, with the most recent occurrence being Feb. 25, 2011 vs Portland.

Austin Roest potted two shorthanded goals in the contest, with defenseman Eric Jamieson contributing the team's third by 10:36 in the second period. Roest became just the fifth Silvertip to score multiple shorthanded goals in a single game, joining Tyler Maxwell (Oct. 10, 2010 vs Kelowna), Daniel Bartek (Nov. 5, 2008 at Regina), Kyle Beach (Nov. 18, 2007 at Chilliwack) and John Lammers (Oct. 28, 2005 at Vancouver).

"Obviously it's not the goal to score on the penalty kill," Roest commented after the game. "I think we took advantage of our chances tonight and we got rewarded for it. We wanted to work on being more aggressive on the penalty kill and it showed tonight."

Everett had entered their two-game weekend with their kill operating at 73.2%, sitting 19th in the league. They killed all six penalties taken on Friday against the Kelowna Rockets and six of seven on Saturday against Vancouver, jumping to 14th overall and a 76.8% success rate.

"With our struggles in the past, we worked on the PK all week," noted defenseman Eric Jamieson. "It was a big weekend for the boys. We worked out the kinks and got rewarded."

The Silvertips have scored the fourth-most shorthanded goals in the league with five on the season, trailing the Prince George Cougars (nine), Portland Winterhawks (seven) and Medicine Hat Tigers (seven).

"I feel like the guys have been getting it," explained assistant coach Mike Field, primary orchestrator of the Silvertips' PK. "I guess it was more of a process than I thought it would be. You can see the last two days, it's clicked. All five guys [four skaters plus the goaltender] were on the same page, and we're able to play faster."

The Tips' overall success on the penalty kill spurred them to victory both nights, as they took a 2-1 win over Kelowna and a 6-2 win over Vancouver. They own the fifth-best penalty kill in the league while on home ice, clicking at 83.7% while at Angel of the Winds Arena.

"A good penalty kill starts in net with your goaltender," said general manager/head coach Dennis Williams. "I thought Palms did a great job staying calm, and our guys did a really good job of staying tight, being in shot lanes, [Jamieson] with his long stick disrupting things. We had good loose puck recoveries, good clears... I thought our penalty kill was the best it's looked all year."

Palmer finished the weekend with a .933 save percentage, stopping 42 of 45 total shots.
