Brandon Wheat Kings News Release

BRANDON M.B. - The Brandon Wheat Kings storm back to force overtime, but fall in a shootout Friday night.

It was a very entertaining first period with some gloves dropped and quality chances but it remained scoreless after 20 minutes. Wheat Kings put up 19 shots on goal in the opening frame, the most shots in the first period all season. The highlight of the period was Matthew Henry throwing a big hit which turned into not one fight, but two fights. Evan Groening would challenge Josh Mendernach and then Matt Henry would challenge Ashton Cumby at the same time. It would end up with the Wheat Kings going on the powerplay but they were unable to cash in.

The second period saw amazing stops by both Carson Bjarnason and Mason Beaupit but in the end it was the Winnipeg ICE scoring the opening goal at the midway mark of the 2nd with Zack Ostapchuk finding Evan Friesen alone in the slot giving the ICE a 1-0 lead after 40 minutes.

The Wheat Kings were 1-26-2 when trailing after 40 minutes and Winnipeg ICE were a perfect 43-0 when leading after 40 minutes. The stats were not in favour of the Brandon Wheat Kings, but they didn't care. Nolan Flamand was able to score on the powerplay and then minutes later Dawson Pasternak scored off his foot to make it 2-1 Wheat Kings. 5 seconds later the ICE would tie it with Briley Wood tying the game up forcing overtime. Overtime would solve nothing and the game would go to a shootout. In the shootout, Dawson Pasternak would score the opening goal for the Wheat Kings but Connor McClennon and Zack Ostapchuk would score a pair giving the ICE a 3-2 victory in extra time. The Winnipeg ICE have now won their 14th in a row over the Brandon Wheat Kings.
