WHITE PLAINS, November 19, 2014 - The Westchester Knicks (0-2) fell to the Canton Charge (1-1) in front of a sold out crowd Wednesday night with a 88-84 loss in the first-ever regular season home game in franchise history.
Starting off with a big lead in the first quarter, the Westchester Knicks lost steam as the game progressed, ultimately giving up 10 points in the final three minutes. Head Coach Kevin Whitted noted the team got stagnant with intensity slowing towards the end. "It's a process," said Whitted. "It takes time, and it takes communication. But the learning curve must continue to go up." Turnovers and fouls troubled Westchester throughout the game, with Canton scoring 20 points on 11 Knicks turnovers. Alex Kirk, on assignment from the Cleveland Cavaliers, hit several key free throws down the stretch ultimately solidifying the win for the Canton Charge.
Scoring the first points in franchise history, 6-8, 270 pound center Darnell Jackson supplied 17 points total shooting eighty percent with eight rebounds and two assists. New York Knicks affiliate player Langston Galloway stayed reliable with 17 points, three rebounds, and two assists. Todd Mayo, making history with the first block, first steal, and first three-point shot at the first-ever home game added 12 points and three rebounds. Franchise favorite Thanasis Antetokounmpo smashed the first slam dunk for the team, ending the night with 9 points.
Kirk led the Charge with 24 points on 9-of-20 shooting with five rebounds. Justin Johnson added 15 points and four rebounds, with Michael Dunigan netting 12 points for Canton.
The Westchester Knicks will return to the Westchester County Center to face the Grand Rapids Drive on Friday, Nov. 21 at 7:00 p.m. Grand Rapids, the NBA D-League affiliate of the Detroit Pistons, is also new to the D-League this season.
