Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
HIGHLIGHTS: The West Virginia Power beat the Asheville Tourists 5-4 Friday evening at Appalachian Power Park. The Power built a four run advantage, but the Tourists rallied before West Virginia tallied the final run in the seventh inning.
Asheville struck first with a run off of Quinton Miller in the first inning, but West Virginia would plate runs in the second, third, fifth, and sixth innings. In the home half of the second, Rogelio Noris scored on a Jesus Brito triple. In the third, Bengie Gonzalez gave the Power their first lead when he scored on a past ball. Aaron Baker added a run with a sacrifice fly during the fifth, and Noris scored on a fielder's choice in the sixth to build a 4-1 lead.
In the top of the seventh, Asheville tagged Marc Baca for three runs during his second inning of work. Jose Gonzalez, Joe Sanders, and Tyler Massey reached on three consecutive doubles, with Eliezer Mesa bringing home the tying run on a ground out.
The Power regained the lead for good with a run in the bottom half of the inning. Tourists' reliever Rhett Ballard hit Evan Chambers with a pitch, who advanced to second on a ground rule double by Baker. Kyle Morgan delivered a run-scoring single to drive in the eventual winning run.
Baca was charged with a blown save but picked up the win, while Ballard was charged with his first loss of the season. Zach Foster pitched the ninth for his first save of 2010. Four Power players had multi-hit games, lead by Brito's three for three effort. Avery Barnes and Tyler Massey had two hits apiece for the Tourists, which dropped their second straight after having won the previous five games.
West Virginia and Asheville continue this four-game set Saturday night at Appalachian Power Park. Phillip Irwin and Jonathan Vargas are slated to pitch for the Power and Tourists respectively with a first pitch scheduled for 7:05 pm.
