Lexington Legends News Release
Drew Maggi had four hits for the second straight game and four West Virginia pitchers combined for a six-hit shutout as the Power defeated the Lexington Legends 9-0 Sunday afternoon in Charleston.
The Power jumped out to a 4-0 lead in the bottom of the second inning. Chase Lyles and Justin Howard started the rally with singles, and a wild pitch by Legends' starter David Martinez put runners at second and third with one out. Kawika Emsley-Pai's single scored Lyles and Howard, and Emsley-Pai went to second when center fielder Bryce Lane bobbled the ball for an error. Eric Avila singled, scoring Emsley-Pai, and Avila advanced to second on the throw to the plate. Maggi's second hit of the game brought Avila home with the fourth run of the inning.
In the West Virginia third, Mel Rojas singled, stole second, advanced to third on Howard's single and scored on Dan Grovatt's sacrifice fly to give the Power a 5-0 lead. West Virginia added a single run in the sixth on Maggi's RBI single, and another in the seventh on Lyles' home run. The Power scored their final two runs in the bottom of the eighth on a walk to Avila, a two-out triple by Rojas and a single by Lyles.
Maggi had four singles in five at-bats. His four-for-five game Saturday night included three doubles.
Starter Jameson Taillon worked the first four innings. He struck out nine batters and walked none. Justin Ennis (5-2) worked the fifth, sixth and seventh and picked up the victory. Rinku Singh pitched the eighth, and Jason Townsend worked the ninth for West Virginia.
Martinez (5-6) took the loss.
West Virginia has won two of three in the five-game series, which continues Monday night. Game time is 7:05 p.m.
