
Pitching, Homers Lead Greensboro to 6-0 Win

Greensboro, N.C. - Greensboro starter James Leverton struck out a career high 13 batters and the Grasshoppers offense came to life in the late innings to defeat the Delmarva Shorebirds, 6-0, at NewBridge Bank Park on Sunday night. The Shorebirds have lost seven straight games.
Shorebirds starter Jake Cowan and Greensboro starter James Leverton held the offenses scoreless over the first five innings.
In the sixth, the Grasshoppers cracked the scoreboard. Marcell Ozuna reached base courtesy of a leadoff walk. Two batters later, Mark Canha singled to advance Ozuna to third. Then, Aaron Dudley pulled an RBI single to right field to give the 'Hoppers a 1-0 lead.
Greensboro added to their lead in the seventh. After Cowan retired the first two batters, he issued back-to-back walks. D.J. Ferguson replaced Cowan on the mound and surrendered a three-run homer to Mark Canha to give the Grasshoppers a 4-0 lead. Later in the inning, Jacob Realmuto singled home Aaron Dudley.
Ryan Fisher led off the eighth inning with a solo home run over the right field wall, the fifth home run of the series for Greensboro. Of the 20 runs that Greensboro has scored, 13 are due to the long ball.
Leverton retired 15 of 17 batters between the second and sixth innings en route to his third win of the season. He scattered just four hits over seven shutout innings.
Cowan was tagged with the loss over 6.2 innings. He held the Grasshoppers to just four hits and no runs over the first five innings before running into trouble.
John Ruettiger paced the Shorebirds offense with a 3-for-4 night. Ruettiger has three 3-hit games in his last four games.
The Shorebirds and Grasshoppers play game four of the series on Monday, August 29 at 7:00 p.m. LHP Matt Bywater is the scheduled starter.
