Savannah Sand Gnats News Release
SAVANNAH, GA - The Charleston RiverDogs earned their first win in six tries in 2011 at Savannah's Historic Grayson Stadium with a 5-1 defeat of the Savannah Sand Gnats Sunday afternoon.
The Gnats (37-26/76-56), who entered Sunday with a two game lead over both the Augusta GreenJackets and the Greenville Drive for first place, will see their lead cut to one game over the winner of the Drive-GreenJackets' confrontation in Greenville. If either Augusta or Greenville comes back to win the second half, they will be the Gnats' opponent in the first round of the South Atlantic League playoffs. However, if the Gnats hold one to win both halves, they will play the team with the second-best overall record, where Greenville entered Sunday with a seven-game lead over Augusta with eight games to play.
The RiverDogs (25-38/51-82) broke through for the game's first run against Savannah starter Yohan Almonte in the second inning on an RBI single through the left side from SS Jose Mojica. Charleston added two more runs in the fourth to establish a 3-0 lead. Almonte, who allowed three runs on eight hits in his four innings of work, was charged with his eighth loss of the year to fall to 7-8.
The 'Dogs added two runs in the fifth against reliever Luis Rojas, who created trouble for himself by walking the bases full.
The Gnats scored their only run in the bottom of the eighth on doubles by second baseman Luis Nieves and shortstop Wilfredo Tovar. Tovar was 2-4 with two doubles, giving him six straight multi-hit games and a seven-game hitting streak overall. He is now hitting .355/.421/.473 (AVG/OBP/SLG) in his 24 games in August. The two doubles gave him 21 for the year, a new career high.
Charleston starter Vidal Nuno was excellent over seven shutout innings, holding the Gnats to five hits while allowing just one runner to third base to pick up his second South Atlantic League win in his sixth start for the RiverDogs.
The Gnats and RiverDogs will play game four of their five-game series Monday at 7:05 pm when the Gnats will send RHP Gonzalez Germen (7-6, 3.44) to the hill against RHP Manuel Barreda (4-2, 4.03). Gates open at 6 pm and the radio broadcast on News/Talk 630 and sandgnats.com will begin at 6:50 pm.
