Charleston RiverDogs News Release

SAVANNAH, Ga. - Vidal Nuno turned in 7.0 sparkling innings of shutout ball as the Charleston RiverDogs snapped a three-game losing streak with a 5-1 win over the Savannah Sand Gnats in South Atlantic League action Sunday afternoon at Historic Grayson Stadium.

Charleston upped its mark to 25-38 and 51-82 overall, while Savannah fell to 37-26 and 76-56.

A night after being kept off the scoreboard until the ninth inning, the RiverDogs struck for a 1-0 second inning lead off of Sand Gnats' starter Yohan Almonte (7-8). Kevin Mahoney cracked an opposite field double to begin the frame, and scurried home on Jose Mojica's RBI single through the hole on the left side of the infield.

The RiverDogs added two more runs in the fourth to chase Almonte from the hill. Kelvin De Leon and Mike Ferraro stroked consecutive singles to set the table. Taylor Grote then came through with a RBI single, before Jeff Farnham produced a 3-0 advantage on a fielder's choice groundout which plated Ferraro.

Almonte scuffled over his 4.0 innings of work, permitting the three runs on eight hits and a walk while fanning two.

Luis Rojas relieved Almonte for the fifth, but could not silence the RiverDogs attack as they built a 5-0 lead. Rojas dug himself into a hole by walking Shane Brown, Mahoney, and De Leon to load the bases with nobody out. A Ferraro double play ball then gave Charleston a 4-0 cushion, and Mojica notched his second RBI of the day by hammering a line drive double to left to cap the rally.

Nuno (2-1) was his typical economical self, lulling the Savannah bats to sleep over 7.0 scoreless frames. The 24-year old left-hander surrendered only five hits and walked none, while punching out two.

The Sand Gnats were able to avoid a shutout by scratching out a run against RiverDogs' righty Brett Gerritse in the bottom of the eighth. Luis Nieves cracked a two-bagger, and raced home on a RBI double by Wilfredo Tovar. That was all Savannah would get, however, as Gerritse worked a 1-2-3 ninth to sew up the win.

The RiverDogs and Sand Gnats engage in the fourth game of this extended five-game set on Monday night at 7:05 p.m. Right-hander Manny Barreda (4-2, 4.03 ERA) is slated to toe the slab for Charleston, against fellow righty Gonzalez Germen (7-6, 3.44 ERA) of the rival New York Mets affiliate.
