Charleston Dirty Birds News Release
The West Virginia Power shutout the Lexington Legends 9-0 on Sunday afternoon at Appalachian Power Park. Four Power pitchers combined for the team's 12th shutout of the season, limiting the Legends to six hits while striking out 12.
West Virginia gained the advantage against Lexington starting pitcher David Martinez in the bottom of the second inning. Three of the first four batters reached on singles, including a hit by Kawika Emsley-Pai that brought home both Chase Lyles and Justin Howard. Emsley-Pai would score on a single by Eric Avila, who would then cross home on a single by Drew Maggi to create a 4-0 lead after two innings.
In the Power portion of the third, West Virginia added a run against Martinez. Mel Rojas Jr. singled to lead off the inning and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dan Grovatt.
West Virginia capped the scoring with runs in the sixth, seventh, and eighth innings. Avila scored on a Maggi single in the sixth, and Chase Lyles hit his second home run of the season in the seventh inning; a solo shot off Legends reliever Murilo Gouvea. In the eighth, Avila walked and was eventually plated on a triple by Rojas Jr., when then scored on a single from Lyles.
Jameson Taillon made his final 2011 start at Appalachian Power Park and pitched well. The second overall selection of the 2010 draft did not factor in the decision with four innings pitched. Taillon only allowed three hits while striking out a season-high nine batters.
Justin Ennis (5-2) pitched three innings of shutout relief to earn the win, and Martinez (5-6) took the loss after surrendering five runs on ten hits, all of which were singles. Rinku Singh and Jason Townsend each added on scoreless inning to finish off the shutout.
West Virginia collected 19 hits in the game, including four singles apiece by Maggi and Howard. It was the sixth four-hit game of the year by Maggi and second in as many days.
West Virginia has two home games remaining this season. The Power will host the Legends agains on Monday evening at 7:05 pm on a Family Buck Night. Eliecer Navarro is slated to start for West Virginia and will be opposed Carlos Quevedo. For tickets of information, call 304-344-BATS or visit wvpower.com.
