Vermont Lake Monsters News Release
BURLINGTON, VT --- Mitchell Tolman snapped a 2-2 tie with a two-out, two-run double in the top of the eighth inning and Logan Hill added a three-run homer in the top of the ninth to lead the West Virginia Black Bears to a 7-3 victory over the Vermont Lake Monsters in the first New York-Penn League meeting ever between the two teams at historic Centennial Field on Saturday night.
Vermont led 2-1 when the Black Bears tied the game in the eighth on a leadoff single, walk and a throwing error by third baseman Trace Loehr on a sacrifice bunt. After another sacrifice bunt put runners on second and third, Lake Monsters reliever Tyler Painton got Ty Moore to groundout to shortstop for the second out before Tolman smacked an 0-2 pitch from Painton into the leftfield gap to give West Virginia a 4-2 lead.
Hill then gave the Black Bears some insurance runs in the ninth inning with a two-out, three-run shot to leftfield for his third home run of the season and also raised his league-leading RBI total to 20. Vermont had outscored its opponents 27-5 in the eighth and ninth innings combined over the first 20 games of the season before the Black Bears put six runs on the board on Saturday
The Lake Monsters had taken a 2-1 lead with single runs in the second inning on a Chris Iriart RBI double and third inning on a Loehr solo home run, his first-ever homer in his second professional season. Loehr added an RBI single in the bottom of the ninth, cutting the deficit to 7-3, and finished the night 2-for-4 with a run and two RBI. Mikey White was 2-for-3 with a double to extend his hitting streak to 10 games.
Lake Monsters starter Kyle Friedrichs allowed one run on three hits over three innings, while reliever Kevin Ferreras (1-2) allowed a walk and a hit in two scoreless innings before being charged with three unearned runs in the eighth inning to take the loss. West Virginia starter Dario Agrazal allowed two runs on three hits over five innings in a no-decision, while Edgar Santana (1-0) one hit in two shutout frames for the win and Andy Otamendi one run in two innings for his second save.
Vermont (8-13) and West Virginia (10-11) will play the second game of the three-game series on Sunday evening starting at 5:05 pm. Gates open at 4:00 pm with the first 650 kids, 15 & younger, receiving a free Youth BMX Bike Helmet courtsey of Hickok & Boardman, Vermont NEA and Free Press Media.
