LOWELL, Mass. -- The Mahoning Valley Scrappers (7-14) came into LeLacheur Park in Lowell to beat the Lowell Spinners (13-9) by a final of 8-6 in front of 5,553 on Saturday night.

The big hit for the Scrappers came in the top of the 9th when Nate Winfrey ripped a double to left-center to score Ka'ai Tom and Emmanuel Tapia.

The Spinners jumped all over Kieran Lovegrove early on in the first. Singles for Luis Alexander Basabe, Jeremy Rivera, Tate Matheny, and Austin Rei led off the first. Basabe, Rivers, Matheny, and Rei scored in the inning. Lowell led 4-0 after one.

Mahoning Valley refused to go down throughout the game without a fight. In the top of the second, Winfrey scored on a groundout by Sam Haggerty, who got his first professional start on Saturday night. Austin Fisher later scored on a single by Silento Sayles.

The Scrappers scored two more in the top of the third. Li-Jen Chu doubled and then scored on a sacrifice bunt by David Armendariz. A throwing error by the catcher Austin Rei allowed Chu to score.

Armendariz later scored on a ground out by Tapia.

Rei and Josh Ockimey scored in the top of the third to take a 6-4 lead on Mahoning Valley. Haggerty scored in the top of the fourth on an RBI single by Chu.

The big hit was the double by Winfrey, and the Scrappers have scored 17 runs in their last three games.

Nine of the 11 hits for Lowell came in the first four innings. Cortland Cox (1-0) gets his first win of the season. He allowed just two hits in his four innings and struck out five. Devon Stewart earned his first professional save. Taylor Nunez (1-1) takes the loss. He gave up the double to Winfrey.
