Fedde's Best Effort not Enough for Doubledays

July 11, 2015 - New York-Penn League (NYPL)
Auburn Doubledays News Release

AUBURN, NY - Erick Fedde was very good in his fourth start for Auburn, but earned the first loss of his career despite giving up just one earned run in a 3-1 loss to Staten Island.

The Yankees struck first in the very first inning. With one out, Kyle Holder singled into left center and stole second. The 2015 first round pick later scored on a two-out double off the bat of Griffin Gordon into right to put Staten Island up 1-0.

The Baby Bombers didn't take long to add their second run of the day. In the second inning, Thario Estrada hit a slow grounder back to the mound, but Fedde's throw to first was wild and Estrada advanced to second. The second baseman came around to score on an infield single to second from Junior Valera and Staten Island took a 2-0 lead.

Fedde cruised through his next three innings of work. His final line was 5 IP, 4 H, 2 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, and 6 K's. Including today's start, Fedde has given up 2 ER over 14 inning while walking none and striking out 17 over his last three starts.

The Doubledays put their first and only run on the board in the fifth. Kelvin Gutierrez led off the inning and was hit on his left elbow for the second time and advanced to second on a wild pitch. He eventually scored on a single to left by Randy Encarnacion.

Staten Island added an insurance run in the seventh. The 7-8-9 hitters for the Yankees hit back-to-back-to-back singles off Taylor Guilbeau in his first professional appearance to take a 3-1 lead.

A day after Auburn recorded a season high 14 hits, season high 13 runs, and had a runner in scoring position in every inning in a 13-1 win over Batavia, the offense was silenced tonight. The Doubledays managed just four hits and had a runner in scoring position in only three innings. Auburn stranded four runners compared to Staten Island's six.

Luis Cedeno earned the victory for the Yankees. His line was 6 IP, 2 H, 1 R, 1 ER, 0 BB, and 2 K's as he earned his third win of the season to move to 3-1.

The Doubledays look to bounce back tomorrow night in game two of the series. McKenzie Mills (0-1, 5.06 ERA) starts for Auburn against Derek Callahan (2-1, 1.45 ERA) for Staten Island. First pitch is at 5:05 PM at Falcon Park!

Saturday's Particulars:

WP - Luis Cedeno (3-1)
