Connecticut Falls to 1-3 on Road Trip

WILLIAMSPORT, PA-The Connecticut Tigers (10-11) dropped the opening game of a three game series with the Williamsport Crosscutters (16-5) by a final score of 10-3.

With the loss Connecticut falls below .500 for the first time since July 1st while Williamsport improves to 12-1 at home this year. The Crosscutters own the best record in the New York-Penn League.

The Tigers jumped on top 1-0 in the first. Centerfielder Joey Havrilak (1-4, 2B) led off the game with a walk and moved to third and a single by second basemen Brett Pirtle (1-5). Havrilak scored on sacrifice fly by Christin Stewart.

Sandy Baez (1-3) got the start for Connecticut and looked good through the first two innings. However, with the score now 1-1 in the fourth Baez got into some trouble. Right fielder Jose Pujols (1-4, 3 R) started the inning with a double and after a walk and single the bases were loaded. Catcher Austin Bossart (3-4, 2 RBI) drove in a run with an RBI single to give Williamsport their first lead 2-1. The next batter shortstop William Cuicas (1-3, 2 RBI) drove in two making it 4-1.

Williamsport continued to swing it well the following inning. Centerfielder Mark Laird (3-4, R, RBI) began the inning with a single later and scored on the two run homerun by first basemen Venn Biter (2-5, 2 RBI) making it 6-1. It was the second homerun of the season for Biter.

The Crosscutters added one more in the frame and then scored two more in the seventh, followed by a single run in the eighth. Both runs in the seventh scored on a two run homer by Brenden Hayden (3-4, 3 RBI, 3 R). For Hayden is was also his second homerun of the year. The 17 hits Williamsport had were the most allowed by Connecticut pitching all year.

Baez ended up working four innings allowing ten hits and six runs. Mitch Gueller (3-1) picked up the win for Williamsport as he went five strong innings giving up just that single run on three hits. He did walk three during his outing.

Connecticut will play Williamsport tomorrow in the second game of the three game series. The first pitch on Sunday is scheduled for 5:05 p.m.
