CHARLESTON, SC - West Virginia's Tony Sanchez went 2-for-4 with a home run and two RBI as West Virginia defeated Charleston, 4-1, in South Atlantic League action Tuesday in front of 2,404 fans at West Virginia's Appalachian Power Park.
With the victory, the Power take the first three games in the series and raise their second half record to 17-13 (44-56 overall) while the RiverDogs fall to 13-19 in the second half (52-50 overall).
West Virginia jumped to a 3-0 lead in the first when Starling Marte reached on a leadoff infield single and stole second. Austin McClune slapped a groundball to Charleston shortstop Addison Maruszak, who committed a throwing error allowing Marte to score and McClune to scamper into third. Sanchez lined a RBI single to right that plated McClune. Following a second error by Maruszak that moved Sanchez to second and allowed Calvin Anderson to reach, Quincy Latimore walked to load the bases. Bobby Spain drove in Sanchez on a groundball double-play for the inning's third run.
The Power added a run in the third when Sanchez tattooed his second home run of the season over the left field wall for a solo shot that made the score 4-0.
Charleston mustered a run in the ninth to make the score 4-1 when Jeff Farnham, Ray Kruml and Abraham Almonte each walked to begin the inning. With Melky Mesa up to the plate a passed ball was charged to Power catcher Josue Peley on a swinging strike three that allowed Farnham to score from third.
RiverDogs starter Cory Arbiso (3-7) suffered the loss after he allowed four runs - one earned - on seven hits and two walks while striking out five in 6.2 frames.
Power reliever Brian Leach (4-1) earned the victory after tossing the final six stanzas and was charged with one earned run on one hit and four walks while striking out six.
West Virginia starter Rudy Owens was handed a no-decision after he threw 3.0 hitless innings where he walked two and struck out four.
Neall French accounted for the RiverDogs single hit while the Power ratcheted eight base knocks led by Marte and Sanchez, who each tallied a pair.
The RiverDogs turn to right-hander Brandon Braboy (2-4, 3.61 ERA) to avoid the series sweep while the Power counter with righty Gabriel Alvardo (5-8, 5.23 ERA) as the series finale is set for Wednesday at 7:05 p.m.
