Hickory Crawdads News Release
HICKORY, N.C. - Tuesday night's game between the Hickory Crawdads and the Augusta GreenJackets was suspended in the top of the fourth inning due to rain with Augusta in a 4-1 lead. The game will resume on Wednesday afternoon at 12 p.m. and will be a nine-inning contest, followed by tomorrow's scheduled game, which will be seven innings.
Augusta got on the board first with a couple of runs against RHP Neil Ramirez and the Crawdads in the opening inning. A lead-off double by CF Francisco Peguero started the inning and was followed by a two-run homer hit by LF Wendell Fairley, making it 2-0. A fly ball out and a walk later, the skies opened at the ballpark and the game was sent to the evening's first delay, due to lightning and rain. The delay ensued for 41 minutes, before play resumed and Ramirez got out of the inning with a double play.
After the GreenJackets moved ahead, 3-0, on a solo homer by DH Andy D'Alessio in the top of the third, the Crawdads came back and got on the board with a run against LHP Eric Surkamp in the bottom of the third. RF Miguel Alfonzo singled to start the frame and promptly stole his way to second base. However, Alfonzo was hit by the throw on the steal and was forced out of the game due to injury. RF Eric Fry took over on the bases and would end up scoring on an error committed by SS Ehire Adrianza on a ground ball hit by SS Leury Garcia, making it 3-1.
Augusta stretched the lead back to three runs with a tally in the top of the fourth. 3B Charlie Culberson opened the inning with a single and was followed by a base hit from 2B Juan Perez, which moved Culberson to third base. Perez then attempted to steal second base, and the throw by C Doug Hogan got past the covering 2B Andres James out to center, enabling Culberson to score from third and Perez to take third on the missed catch, making it 4-1. Ramirez then induced a pop out before the rain returned sending the game into another delay, which lasted 53 minutes before the umpires suspended the contest.
All of tomorrow's action will be broadcast live on Hickorycrawdads.com, starting with Crawdads Countdown, presented by George's On The Lake, before tonight's game resumes at noon. All of the action will then be aired on tape delay tomorrow evening on The Big Dawg 92.1 FM and Hickorycrawdads.com at 7 p.m.
