7 p.m. - Nymeo Field (Frederick, Md.)
Game #78 (Away Game #39)
DASH FALL 3-2 FOR 2ND STRAIGHT DAY
Despite a strong High-A debut from John Parke, the Dash could not overcome an early homer, falling 3-2 to Frederick at Nymeo Field on Wednesday. Frederick struck in the bottom of the first inning. After back-to-back singles against Parke to start the frame, Wilson Garcia socked a homer over the left-center field fence to give the Keys a 3-0 lead. That would be all that Parke allowed in his six innings of work, but Cristian Alvarado tossed six shutout innings for Frederick, striking out eight without issuing a walk. Winston-Salem plated two in the eighth, but Tyler Erwin locked down his seventh save of the season.
A PLACE THAT SHEETS KNOWS WELL
Growing up in Lutherville, Md., Dash first baseman Gavin Sheets is playing just about an hour away from his hometown during Winston's series at Frederick. Sheets, who was a second-round pick by the White Sox last year, played four years at Gilman School, which is located in the Roland Park neighborhood of Baltimore. He is the currently the all-time leader in hits, doubles and RBIs at Gilman. Entering Thursday, Sheets is riding an 11-game hitting streak, during which he is 16-for-45 with four RBIs. On Wednesday, the 22-year-old went 2-for-4 with a double.
#NEXTSOX
Rated the 24th-best overall prospect by MLB Pipeline, Robert is 5-for-24 with four runs scored and an RBI to start at the High-A level. Robert, who was promoted to Winston on Thursday, began the year on the Dash's disabled list with a sprained ligament in his left thumb before being transferred to Low-A Kannapolis, where he posted a line of .289/.360/.400 with four RBIs in 13 games. Chicago signed Robert in May of 2017 for $26 million, which is the second-largest bonus ever given to an amateur. Current White Sox second baseman Yoan Moncada was signed by Boston for $31 million. Robert is wearing #21 due to a suggestion from Dash manager Omar Vizquel, who said Robert reminded him of baseball legend Roberto Clemente.
HOW THE NEW GUYS ARE FAIRING
Along with Robert, five players were promoted to Winston-Salem a week ago. Here's how each player performed with Kannapolis, and how they've done in Winston so far:
RHP Tyler Johnson (SAL All-Star): seven saves and a 1.33 ERA with 46K in 27.0IP w/ KAN; earned first High-A save on Saturday with a 1-2-3 ninth vs. DE
INF Laz Rivera (SAL All-Star): led the SAL in average (.346) with six homers and 24 RBIs; 9-for-25 with a homer, six runs and three RBIs
OF Luis Gonzalez (SAL All-Star): Logged an impressive .850 OPS with eight homers and 26 RBIs; 8-for-22 with six runs and four doubles
RHP Blake Battenfield: Went 5-3 with a 2.00 ERA in 13 starts for the I's; Picked up the win on Monday, allowing two runs in eight innings in his High-A debut
RHP Lincoln Henzman: Went 6-3 with a 2.23 ERA in 13 starts; yielded two runs in one inning on Sunday vs. DE
FINDING HIS STRIDE
Looking to halt its two-game slide, Winston-Salem now turns to right-hander Luis Martinez on Thursday. The 23-year-old has been stellar as of late, posting a 1-0 with a 1.05 ERA over his last three starts. Martinez was signed by the White Sox in 2011 out of Carupano, Venezuela, and he is currently in his second go-around with Winston-Salem. Last year, the righty posted a 9.00 ERA in five outings for the Dash. So far this season, he is 4-4 with a 3.76 ERA. He has been even better on the road, posting a 3.29 ERA in seven appearances away from BB&T Ballpark this year.
DASH DOTS
Dash alumnus Dane Dunning, who is rated the 55th-best overall prospect in baseball per MLB Pipeline, will miss six to eight weeks but will not need surgery after suffering a moderate right elbow strain, the White Sox announced Wednesday...Dunning was with Double-A Birmingham at the time of the injury.
