TONIGHT: Winners of three straight, the Mudcats continue a six game road trip tonight with game three of a four game series versus the Salem Red Sox at Haley Toyota Field in Salem, VA. Tonight's game is the third of 11 total meetings between the two teams this season. Carolina won again last night and leads both the overall and current series 2-0.
ICYMI: Braden Webb struck out eight over six scoreless innings, Tucker Neuhaus went 2-for-4 with a double and a home run and Daniel Brown earned his second save of the season as the Mudcats defeated the Red Sox 4-1 on Wednesday night at Haley Toyota Field in Salem.
ABOUT LAST NIGHT: Demi Orimoloye reached on an infield single in his final at-bat last night and stretched his current hitting streak to six straight games. Orimoloye has now hit safely in all six games played with Carolina and is batting .333/.407/.375 (8-for-24, 4 R, 1 2B, 3 RBI) since coming up from Low-A Wisconsin.
STARTING OFF: RHP Alec Bettinger has the game three of four start tonight versus the Red Sox in Salem. The University of Virginia product is currently 0-1 with a 2.45 ERA over one start and one relief appearance so far with the Mudcats this season. His first start as a Mudcat came on June 16 in Myrtle Beach where he totaled a career high 10 strikeouts while pitching through 6.0 scoreless innings. Bettinger, however, suffered the tough luck loss that day as Carolina was shutout in what was game two of a doubleheader against the Pelicans on the penultimate day of the first half. Bettinger last pitched on June 21 against Buies Creek and did so out of the bullpen following RHP Devin Williams. Bettinger allowed a run and four hits over 5.0 innings (2 BB, 2 SO) his last time out and ended up with a no decision.
WHERE THEY RANK: LHP Cam Roegner is currently 2nd in the Carolina League in earned run average (1.77), tied for 2nd in wins (7), 5th in WHIP (1.13) and 2nd in innings pitched (81.1)... RHP Conor Harber is currently 4th in the CL in earned run average (2.47)... RHP Braden Webb is currently tied for 4th in the CL in strikeouts (74), 5th among CL starters in lowest batting average against (.224) and 3rd in highest SO/9ip ratio (9.94)... INF Tucker Neuhaus (98) leads CL hitters in most strikeouts... RHP Luke Barker is currently 2nd in the CL in games (25) and tied for 3rd in saves (8). Barker is also 2nd among CL relievers in lowest batting average (.153), 4th in lowest BB-IBB/9ip ratio (2.13) and 1st in fewest baserunners/9ip ratio (6.87).
MUDDIES ON THE POND: Carolina is currently 9th in the Carolina League when batting with runners on base (.240 / .674 OPS), 9th when batting with runners in scoring position (.241 / .700 OPS) and 9th when batting with runners in scoring position with 2-outs in an inning (.221 / .667 OPS).
PITCHERS OF LATE: Since June 3, the Carolina bullpen has combined to go 5-1 with 7 saves and a 2.22 ERA (77.0 IP, 38 BB, 75 SO)... The Carolina starting rotation, meanwhile, is 6-9 with a 4.15 ERA over their last 21 games (since June 3) and 104.0 innings pitched (97 strikeouts, 43 walks).
HITS AND Ks: The Carolina offense has totaled 145 more strikeouts than hits (720 SO, 575 H) so far this season. Carolina's difference in strikeouts over hits is currently the 4th largest in MiLB. Since 1991, only the 2017 and 2007 Mudcats have finished a season with more strikeouts than hits. Carolina totaled 164 more strikeouts than hits in 2017 (1,245 SO [franchise record], 1,081 H) and 70 more strikeouts than hits in 2007 (1,219 SO, 1,149 H).
INTRA-DIV: The Mudcats are currently just 27-34 in games against Southern Division opponents and own the Carolina League's second lowest in division winning percentage (.443) this season.
