Ottawa, ON - On a night when Andrew Werner was on top of his game, it was a couple infielders that stole the show for the Ottawa Champions.

Matt Tenaglia and Roberto Ramirez each hit two-run homeruns and Werner pitched eight solid innings for the win as the Champions dropped the Quebec Capitales 9-3.

For Tenaglia and Ramirez, their homeruns put them in a tie for first on the team and second in the Can-Am League in that department.

"Overall it was a good night for our hitters," said Champions manager Hal Lanier. "Ramirez had a big night, Tenaglia had a big night, and we got some hits with runners in scoring position."

After Tenaglia's homerun in the fifth, Daniel Bick singled, went to second on a ground out, and scored on an RBI double by Roberto Ramirez.

Ottawa scored another run in the sixth on an RBI double by Francisco Sosa.

Not to be outdone by the offence, Werner cruised through eight innings, allowing three runs on six hits while striking out five and walking one in lowering his season ERA to 4.27.

"He pitched an outstanding ballgame," said Lanier. "He had command of all his pitches and he gave us a lot of quality innings."

The only real trouble he faced came in the second inning.

Quebec centrefielder Kalian Sams led off the inning with a single and one out later tried to steal second. Werner threw the pickoff to first baseman Jon Talley, whose relay to second was off the mark.

Jean-Luc Blaquiere followed with a double over Mike Schwartz's head in left to drive in Sams, and then Mike Washburn ripped a single past Talley to chase home Blaquiere.

Ottawa picked up three insurance runs in the ninth thanks to some wildness out of the Capitales bullpen.

Reliever Scott Moviel loaded the bases on a double, hit by pitch, and walk. He then proceeded to walk Massanari to force in a run and hit Schwartz to force in another.

Talley capped off the scoring with an RBI groundout to score Boucher.

Righthander Wilmer Font (3-1, 6.12 ERA) will try to match Werner's outing tomorrow night at 7:05 pm as he takes on Capitales' lefthander Mark Hardy (2-0, 2.66 ERA) in game two of the three game series.
