Frederick Keys News Release
Frederick defeated Salem, 15-4, in the rubber match of the three-game. Both teams committed three errors in the game but Salem's proved to be much more costly. Of Frederick's 15 runs, only four were earned. The Keys scored five unearned runs in the third and six in eighth. Ryan O'Shea improved to 2-2 on the season while Brock Huntzinger falls to 0-2 even though he did not allow an earned run in the game.
Salem struck first on Sunday afternoon on a Will Middlebrooks solo homerun but Frederick would respond with a bang in the third. DH Buck Britton led off the inning and he reached on an error by 2B Oscar Tejeda. After a Brian Ward single, SS Mike Mooney moved both runners over on a sac bunt. LF Xavier Avery was the next Key to come to plate and he hit a groundball to second and Tejeda could not glove it again and that scored Britton from third. Huntzinger walked CF Kyle Hudson to load the bases. RF Ronnie Welty stepped to the plate and he belted a Huntzinger pitch deep to right-centerfield for a grand slam. Welty's first career grand slam gave Frederick a 5-1 lead after three innings.
The Red Sox scored two in the top of the fourth including Ryan Lavarnway's sixth home run of season but the Keys would counter once again and this time it came off the bat of DH Buck Britton. In the bottom of the sixth inning, with 3B Billy Rowell on second base, Britton hit a towering shot down the right field line that just cleared the fence. Britton's third home run of the season push the Keys' lead back up for four after six innings.
Frederick surrendered a run to Salem in the top of the eighth but it did not matter much since the Keys plated eight in the bottom half of the inning. L.J. Hoes capped off the inning with a three-run homer, his first of the season.
Brandon Cooney pitched a scoreless ninth to close out the Keys, 15-4, victory. With the win, Frederick improved to 11-6 on the season while Salem fell to 12-5 following the loss.
The Keys have an off-day Monday before heading on a six-game road trip to Winston-Salem and Myrtle Beach. Frederick will visit the Dash on Tuesday night at 7 p.m. from BB&T Field.
The Keys return home on Monday, May 3, when they take on the Winston-Salem Dash at 7 p.m. For tickets call 1-888-8-GO-KEYS or purchase online at www.frederickkeys.com.
