Salem Red Sox News Release

Frederick, MD (April 25, 2010) - Keys right-fielder Ronnie Welty belted a third-inning grand slam and Frederick blew a close game wide open with an eight-run eighth inning to surpass Salem 15-4 and take two out of three games from the Red Sox at Harry Grove Stadium. Three defensive errors, two by second baseman Oscar Tejeda, proved costly for the Sox as an incredible 11 of the 15 runs scored were unearned tallies. Will Middlebrooks blasted his first homer of the year and Ryan Lavarnway drilled his second dinger of the series and league-leading sixth of the season, but Salem could not overcome the defensive deficiencies and the Sox dropped their first series of 2010.

The Sox led 1-0 early after Middlebrooks' second inning solo homer, but the Keys took advantage of two Tejeda errors in the third to load the bases. Kyle Hudson drew a game-tying RBI walk, and then Welty crushed a round-tripper to right-center field off Salem starter Brock Huntzinger to make it 5-1. All five runs in the inning were unearned against Huntzinger, who threw well throughout his five inning outing despite suffering the loss, surrendering just three hits and three walks along with picking up three strikeouts.

Lavarnway led off the fourth inning with a solo shot to bring the Sox back within three, and Salem scored again later in the inning on a Frederick error to make it 5-3. But those two runs were answered by Keys' DH Buck Britton, who launched a high fly to right for a two-run shot in the last of the sixth against Red Sox reliever Lance McClain.

The Keys led 7-4 into their half of the eighth and put the game away with eight runs on five hits, one error, a walk, and a hit-by-pitch. Will Latimer faced nine hitters and was charged with seven runs, but just two of them were earned. Blake Maxwell then came on and served up a three-run homer to LJ Hoes, the first long ball of the season for the Frederick second-baseman.

Frederick's 15 runs came on just 10 hits, with the three errors proving to be difference makers on the afternoon. The Keys went 6-13 with runners in scoring position and only left three on base, while in comparison, the Red Sox went 1-8 with runners in scoring position and stranded 10.

Oscar Tejeda made slight amends for his two errors by pounding three more hits, raising his average to a sizzling .410. Middlebrooks and Lavarnway each complemented their home runs with singles to register multi-hit afternoons as well.

At 12-5, the Red Sox fall back into a first-place tie with the Winston-Salem Dash in the Carolina League Southern Division.

Salem returns home to begin a six-game in seven-day homestand on Monday evening at Lewis-Gale Field. The Red Sox will host the Wilmington Blue Rocks to kick it off with the first pitch set for 7:05. Lefthander Fabian Williamson, who has compiled a 3-0 record and 1.20 ERA through three starts, gets the nod against Wilmington lefty Ivor Hodgson.
