Lynchburg Hillcats News Release
A walk-off blast gave the Nationals a 6-4 win in the rubber match over the Hillcats on Sunday at Pfitzner Stadium.
Lynchburg grabbed a 1-0 lead in the third inning with an RBI single by Dave Sappelt. The Hillcats scored the first run in all three games in the set in Woodbridge.
In the bottom of the fourth inning the Nationals would take the lead with a two-out, two-run RBI single by Jose Lozada. The next inning saw two more runs cam across with a another two-out, two run single by Wilberto Ortiz to give the Nationals a 4-1 lead through five innings.
The Hillcats would put on their rally caps on in the sixth inning. After singles by Neftali Soto and Carlos Mendez, Devin Mesoraco lined as laser three-run home run over the wall in left to tie up the game at four a piece.
The score stayed that way through nine innings thanks to some trickery by Hillcats Manager Pat Kelly. With the bases loaded and one out in the bottom of the ninth inning, Kelly elected to bring a fifth infielder in. Lynchburg got a ground ball double play to end the threat and put the game into extra innings tied at four.
In the bottom of the tenth inning though Potomac would strike. Jose Lozada blasted a two-run home run out to right-center to give the P-Nats a 6-4 walk-off win in the rubber match of the three-game series.
The loss went to Scott Carroll (0-1) for Lynchburg (6-11), who was making his 2010 debut and had tossed four and 1/3 scoreless innings before the homer in the tenth. The win went to Cole Kimball (1-0) for Potomac (7-10).
After an off-day on Monday the Hillcats will be back in action on Tuesday night at Kinston for game one of a three-game series at 7:00 p.m. at Grainger Stadium.
