EASTLAKE, OHIO - Lachlan Wells tossed a career-best six shutout innings Thursday at Classic Park, and Zander Wiel crushed his team-high seventh home run in the Cedar Rapids Kernels' 8-1 win over the Lake County Captains. Thursday's triumph also guaranteed Cedar Rapids' fifth straight season series victory against Lake County.

Wells' second career quality start carried the Kernels (11-10, 47-43) to the victory. He only gave up four hits in six innings but did not allow any runs, any walks or any runner to reach scoring position. Wells also tallied a season-high eight strikeouts in the longest shutout start of his career.

Wiel went deep to cap a five-run rally in the third inning. Earlier in the frame, Jermaine Palacios and Luis Arraez recorded back-to-back RBI singles. Both runners were aboard for Wiel, who launched a three-run home run to center field. It was also his first home run on the road this season .

Jaylin Davis added another home run during the top of the sixth, giving Cedar Rapids a 6-0 lead. Davis lifted the first pitch he saw from Captains starter Shao-Ching Chiang over the right-center field wall for his second home run in as many days. Chiang conceded a career-high-tying six runs and two home runs in a loss.

Lake County (7-13, 47-43) put up its only run in the bottom of the eighth. Sicnarf Loopstok doubled to lead off the inning. Two batters later, Angel Miguel singled to bring in Loopstok.

Cedar Rapids answered in the ninth inning with a pair of runs to reach its winning margin of 8-1. Christian Cavaness and Casey Scoggins each produced RBI singles to cap the scoring in Thursday's contest.

Wells (2-1) earned the victory over Chiang (5-7), the losing pitcher in Lake County's eighth consecutive loss overall. Max Cordy pitched the final three innings for the Kernels to record his first professional save, allowing just one run in relief.

Friday's series finale will be at 7:00 p.m. ET (6:00 p.m. CT). The probable pitchers are Kernels right-hander Dereck Rodriguez (1-10, 6.27 ERA) and Captains right-hander Casey Shane (5-6, 4.08 ERA).
