(Eastlake, OH) - Connor Marabell extended his hitting streak to a 11 games with a two-hit day and Willi Castro recorded his second straight multi-hit performance, but the Lake County Captains lost to the Cedar Rapids Kernels on Thursday at Classic Park, 8-1. The Captains have now lost eight in a row.

Marabell and Castro each went 2-for-4 at the plate with a pair of singles. Unfortunately for the Captains, their hitters could barely make it past first base against Kernels pitching. Cedar Rapids starter Lachlan Wells never allowed a Lake County base runner to advance beyond first base in his six shutout innings on the mound.

While Wells was dealing, the Kernels jumped on Captains starter Shao-Ching Chiang in the third inning. Cedar Rapids exploded for five runs to open the scoring. Jermaine Palacio and Luis Arraez hit back-to-back RBI singles and Zander Wiel dealt the biggest blow with a three-run home run to left-centerfield that gave the Kernels a 5-0 lead.

Chiang (5-7) gave up a pair of home runs in the losing effort. Two innings after giving up the homer to Wiel, Chiang served up a solo shot by Jaylin Davis. Davis had hit a grand slam the night before, but this time he connected with a leadoff long ball to right-center to give Cedar Rapids a 6-0 lead. Chiang was finished after six innings, having given up six runs on eight hits. He walked one and struck out one.

Wells kept the Captains off the scoreboard, but Lake County finally scratched across a run against the Kernels' bullpen. Sicnarf Loopstok hit a leadoff double against Max Cordy in the eighth and Angel Miguel drove him home with a single.

The Captains trailed 6-1 after the RBI knock by Miguel, but Cedar Rapids added two more runs in the ninth and Lake County took one under the chin with an injury to a key reliever. Yoiber Marquina came in to pitch the ninth and gave up three singles to the first four batters he faced. A one-out single by Christian Cavaness gave the Kernels a 7-1 lead and put runners on the corners for Casey Scoggins.

After Marquina's first pitch to Scoggins, a ball high and away, the right-hander was visited on the hill Captains Athletic Trainer Matt Beauregard, Pitching Coach Steve McCatty and Manager Tony Mansolino. Marquina was pulled from the game with an apparent injury after recording one out in the ninth. Erick Algarin gave up a hit to Scoggins to score Brian Olson and give Cedar Rapids an 8-1 lead. Algarin then retired the next two men to end the inning.

The Captains could not manage another run in the ninth. Marabell tallied his second hit of the day and was left on first, as Cordy struck out the final two batters he faced to record his first save of the year. The right-hander pitched three frames and gave up one run on three hits. Cordy struck out four and did not issue a walk.

Wells (2-1) shut down the Captains over six innings and took home the win. The 19-year old lefty surrendered just four Captains hits, all of which were singles. Wells mowed down the Lake County lineup with eight strikeouts and no walks.

Lake County will try to salvage the final game of the three-game series with Cedar Rapids on Friday night at Classic Park. First pitch is scheduled for 7:00 PM.
