Burlington Bees News Release
(Burlington-IA) - Jared Walsh slugged his first home run of the season, helping the Burlington Bees (41-50) beat the Great Lakes Loons (37-53), 7-6, on Thursday night at Community Field.
Great Lakes opened the scoring in the top of the second inning. With one out, Darrien Tubbs reached on a fielding error. Matt Jones then hit a ground ball to first that was thrown away scoring Tubbs, putting the Loons on top, 1-0.
Jared Walsh opened the bottom of the third inning with a double, his 18th of the season. Webster Rivas then put the Bees on the board, lining a single to center, scoring Walsh, tying the game at two.
The Bees defense ran into more problems in the fourth. Noah Perio singled to center to start the top of the fourth inning. After stealing second base, Perio scored on a single off the bat of Logan Landon, giving the Loons the lead back at 2-1. After Landon was caught stealing, Saige Jenco singled to left and moved to second on a fielding error. Jenco stole third base and scored on an errant throw, extending the lead to 3-1.
After Omar Estevez made it a 5-1 game with a two run homer, the Bees bats came to live in the seventh. Alexi Rivera worked a one out walk and moved to second on a Jordan Serena single. After a single by Walsh loaded the bases, Webster Rives singled into left, scoring Rivera, cutting the deficit to 5-2. Michael Hermosillo pulled the Bees to within a run with a single to left, scoring a pair, cutting the Loons' lead to 5-4.
Great Lakes added a run in the eighth on a Logan Landon RBI single but the Bees weren't done yet. With the bases empty and two outs in the bottom of the eighth, the Bees worked back-to-back walks. Jared Walsh then gave the Bees the lead, smashing a three run homerun to right, putting the Bees in front, 7-6.
Sam Holland (2) came on from the Bees' bullpen in the ninth, retiring the Loons in order, and picking up the save. Jhonny Palonco (1-0) earned the win for the Bees while Angel German (0-1) was charged with the loss.
The Bees and the Loons finish up the series on Friday night, at 6:30, at Community Field. Austin Robichaux makes the start for the Bees. For tickets, visit gobees.com or stop by the Bees office. For more information, call the Bees at (319)-754-5705.
