Colorado Springs, CO (April 25, 2017) - Homes for Heroes and the Colorado Springs Switchbacks invite Colorado Springs and surrounding community members to our 1 st annual "Homes for Heroes Community Cares Event on Saturday April 28th, 2018 at Weidner Field, Home of the Colorado Springs Switchbacks. Event - The "Homes for Heroes Community Care K9 Event", sponsored by Homes for Heroes and the Colorado Springs Switchbacks, is a pet-friendly community event that will benefit 23 local K9 officers from Colorado Springs Police Department, El Paso County Sheriff's Department, Fountain Police Department and Woodland Park Police Department. There will be many exciting things to do at the event like: a Pet-Friendly 5K walk/run, K9 Dog demonstrations from local K9 officers and trained dogs from Ray Allen Manufacturing, numerous local vendor booths, great food from 2 local food trucks, Switchbacks player will be in attendance, silent auctions, multiple raffles, fire trucks, ambulances, a kids zone with coloringcontests for prizes and much more. 100% of all proceeds from the event will go directly to each

Department at the end of the event. Also, Mayor John Suthers will also be presenting a grant check from the Homes for Heroes Foundation to the family of Fallen Sheriff Deputy Micah Flick, at that time.

The event is free. There is a $25 registration fee for the pet-friendly 5K walk/run. All run participants will receive a "goodie bag" filled by event sponsors with a complimentary event T-shirt. The 5k walk/run starts at 10:00 AM, with participant and sponsor registration up to 9:00 AM at the stadium. Sign up is at the registration trailer at Weidner field at the date of the race. Various viewing areas will be available along the path for supporters to watch and sponsors to distribute water and other items. Sheriff Bill Elder will be the Official race starter for the event.

"This is our first season hosting this amazing event and we want the community to come out for these amazing K9 officers. We want people to support and really get to know them. Our goal is to not only hit our fundraising goals, but to continue to increase participation for next year," says Preston Smith from Homes for Heroes. "With the help of Pikes Peak Region businesses and exciting entertainment from our K9 friends during the event, we anticipate a great turn out and lots of fun for the whole family.

Rachel Flick will also be in attendance for the $5,000 grant check presentation at 11:30 a.m. with the check presentation to the other departments between 1:00-2:00 p.m.

Following the 5K walk/ run, participants are invited to enjoy BBQ and great food from the 2 food trucks, watch dog demonstrations, walk around the vendor booths, meet the K9s, play in the kid's zone, and tour the fire truck and ambulances. Prizes will be awarded for the first to cross the finish line, most enthusiastic walker, coolest dog costume.
