Toronto Marlies News Release
The Toronto Marlies earned three of a possible six points this week, closing it off with a road victory over the Belleville Senators on Sunday.
Starting the week off with our second school day game of the season, the Marlies hosted Syracuse in a close battle. Ben Smith put the Marlies on the board first, scoring late in the opening period, before the Crunch responded with three straight goals.
Down 3-1 midway through the third, the Marlies had an answer of their own. Andreas Borgman scored to cut the deficit in half and then Chris Mueller capitalized on a late power play with just over 30 seconds remaining to tie the game, forcing overtime. In the extra frame, Syracuse scored as the Marlies took a point after the late comeback.
Back at Ricoh Coliseum on Saturday, the Marlies dropped a 4-1 contest to the Americans. Andreas Johnsson had the lone goal for Toronto, his 24th of the season, moving him into sole possession of second place for points scoring across the league.
With the result, the Marlies lead the regular season series 4-3-0-0 with one game remaining between the two sides. That game is set for April 7 in Rochester.
On Sunday, the Marlies made the short trip to Belleville to take on the Senators. After giving up the opening goal, Trevor Moore had a quick response to tie things up. Thirty seconds into the middle frame, Justin Holl scored from the point to put the Marlies ahead. That would be the first of three straight goals from Marlies defenceman.
On the power play late in the second, Vincent LoVerde connected on a one-timer to extend the lead. Early in the third, Andreas Borgman walked in from the slot to score his third of the season and help the Marlies skate to a 4-1 final.
The Marlies record now sits at 40-16-1-1, keeping them in first place in the North Division.
With the win on Sunday, Garret Sparks tied Justin Pogge for most career wins in Marlies franchise history with 71.
Justin Holl's goal on Sunday gives him 22 points this season, setting a new career high for the defenceman.
The Marlies return to action on Saturday when the Providence Bruins come to town.
