Wave gets back on winning track with 6-5 double-OT win over Dallas

February 16, 2004 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
Milwaukee Wave News Release

(Milwaukee, WI) The Milwaukee Wave is getting ready for what promises to be a tough weekend on the road following a 6-5 double-overtime win over the Dallas Sidekicks this past Saturday (2/14) at U.S. Cellular Arena. Greg Howes' goal, his third of the night at 3:22 of the second extra session enabled the Wave to beat the Sidekicks and improve Milwaukee's record to a Major Indoor Soccer League (MISL) best 18-6 (10-2 home / 8-4 road). Coach Keith Tozer's team is now preparing for a rematch with the Sidekicks this Friday (2/20, 7:05 PM) at Reunion Arena in Dallas, TX before traveling to Philadelphia for a showdown with the Kixx on Sunday (2/22, 12:05 PM CST) at Wachovia Spectrum. Both games may be heard live on 540 AM, WRRD ("The Word") with air time for each broadcast approximately 20 minutes prior to kick-off.

Milwaukee currently leads the MISL Central Division by eight games over the second-place Kansas City Comets (11-15) and by 9.5 games over the third-place St. Louis Steamers (8-15). The Wave's magic number for clinching the division title is four; that is, any combination of four Wave victories / Comets losses will give Milwaukee the division title.

Following this weekend's action, the Wave and the rest of the MISL will take a break from the regular season schedule for the MISL All-Star Weekend February 27-29 in St. Louis. The weekend culminates with the MISL All-Star Game (1:05 PM) and Legends Game (4:05 PM) doubleheader to be played on Sunday, Febuary 29 at Family Arena in St. Charles, MO. Milwaukee will be prominently represented in the All-Star Game with Coach Keith Tozer and six Wave players participating in the contest. Greg Howes, Michael King, Chris Morman and Todd and Troy Dusosky will play for the Tozer-led U.S. squad against an International team that includes Lovelace Ackah. (Dallas Coach Tatu will direct the Internationals.)

Milwaukee's next home game is Saturday, March 6, 4:05 PM when it hosts the Kansas City Comets at U.S. Cellular Arena. All kids 12 and under will receive a free Wisconsin Dells Kids Card good for free admission to several Dells attractions courtesy of Wisconsin Dells and 99 WMYX. The Wave will also be home the following day, Sunday, March 7, 1:05 PM when it entertains the St. Louis Ambush at U.S. Cellular Arena. The first 1500 kids 12 and under will get a free Michael King Wave T-Shirt Jersey courtesy of Wauwatosa Savings Bank and WKLH 96.5.

Wave Notes: *The Wave is now 114-38 (.750) in its last 152 regular and post-season outings.

*The Wave's back-to-back home losses to KC on 2/5 and Phi on 2/8 were the first consecutive home losses for Milwaukee since it dropped its first two home games of the 2000-01 season. Prior to that, the Wave had not lost consecutive home games since the 1994-95 campaign.

*The 12/31 contest v. Monterrey was Coach Keith Tozer's 500th game as coach of the Wave. Now in his 12th season with Milwaukee, Tozer is just the third coach in North American indoor soccer history to guide one team for as many games. Only Kenny Cooper (751 games with Baltimore) and Ron Newman (701 games with San Diego) have coached more games with a single franchise.

*Assistant Coach Steve Morris made his professional head coaching debut on 12/6 @ Bal. He stepped in for Keith Tozer, who was coaching the U.S. Futsal Team in Anaheim, CA.

*Milwaukee's 9-8 (OT) loss on 12/6 @ Bal broke a five-game overtime winning streak for the Wave dating back to the 2001-02 campaign. Milwaukee was 4-0 in extra-session games last year and 1-1 the year before.

*The Wave's 6-5 (2OT) win on 2/14 v. Dal improved the Wave's overtime record to 2-2 this season, and 26-31 all-time including 19-11 at home. It was eighth double OT game in team history – the Wave is 3-5 in such contests (3-1 at home).

*The 15 goals on 11/14 v. KC is the fourth highest total in team history. The Wave team record for most goals in a contest is 18, set on 12/6/98 v. Cle.

*Michael King's goal on 2/8 v. Phi was the 668th of his career moving him past Andy Chapman into sixth place on the all-time indoor soccer list of goal scorers. Cleveland's Hector Marinaro is the all-time leader with 1215.

*Troy Dusosky and Marcelo Fontana each scored a goal to record the 150th point of their respective careers (regular season) in Milwaukee's 6-2 win over Monterrey on 12/31 @ Mil.

*Joe Reiniger has tallied at least one point in 15-of-23 games so far this season and 346-of-367 career NPSL / MISL regular season contests. Reiniger still holds the league's second longest scoring streak at 105 straight games (ended on 3/17/02).

*Greg Howes current indoor consecutive games played streak is currently 149 straight (regular season and playoffs). It's the Wave's longest active streak, and the third longest streak in team history following Michael King (161) and current Wave Assistant Coach Steve Morris (155).

*Goalkeeper Dan Green set a personal record by not allowing any goals in the Wave's 7-1 victory over St. Louis on 1/31 at U.S. Cellular Arena. The 31-year old Waukesha, WI native stopped all six shots that he faced in the contest; however, the Steamers scored while he was in the penalty box. Green's scoreless streak eventually ended at 78:13 on 2/8 v. Phi.

Last Week's Recap:

2/14 @ Milwaukee Wave 6, Sidekicks 5 (2OT) Attendance – 4,659

Forward Greg Howes completed a hat trick when scored on a blast just inside the penalty area at 3:22 of the second overtime to give the Milwaukee Wave a 6-5 win over the Dallas Sidekicks Saturday night (2/14) at U.S. Cellular Arena. Howes, who had tied the contest with a sixth attacker goal at 14:16 of the fourth quarter, scored off a pass from Matt Stewart as the Wave improved its record to a league-best 18-6. Dallas, which was led Martin Nash's four goals, fell to 14-11. The Sidekicks are now 0-1 against Milwaukee this season and 0-7 lifetime against the Wave.

The game did not appear to be headed for a dramatic ending when the Wave jumped out to a 3-0 first half lead capped off by Joe Reiniger's goal at 3:12 of the second quarter. Nash finally got Dallas on the board with his first goal just before halftime (14:59).

Howes scored his first goal on a penalty kick at 2:14 of the third quarter following a hand-ball penalty to Dallas' Jose Alvarado. Nash responded with three consecutive goals, the latter of which tied the score at 4-4 at 0:31 of the fourth quarter. The Sidekicks took the lead when Frank Filo tallied an unassisted goal at 11:03 of the fourth quarter.

Milwaukee inserted Troy Dusosky as an extra attacker for goalkeeper Nick Vorberg and the strategy paid off when Howes scored to even the count (5-5) with just 44 seconds remaining. Both teams had chances to win it in the first overtime, especially Dallas which saw a 30-foot shot from Nash get deflected off the crossbar by Vorberg.

Vorberg (8-3) picked up the win by stopping 17-of-22 shots faced, while DJ Horvath (5-10), who was making his debut for the Sidekicks, saved 18-of-24.

Wave United to Open 2004 A-League Campaign on May 14, 7:05 PM at Uihlein Soccer Park: Milwaukee Wave United, the Wave's A-League (outdoor) team will kick-off the 2004 season on Friday, May 14, 7:05 PM when it hosts the Edmonton Aviators at Uihlein Soccer Park.
