February 16, 2004 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
St. Louis Steamers News Release

(St. Louis, Feb. 16, 2004) -- With the MISL All-Star Game less than two weeks away, St. Louis Steamers All-Stars Steve Butcher and Daryl Doran offered a tantalizing sneak preview by combining for five of the Steamers' six goals in a 6-3 victory over San Diego Monday afternoon at the St. Charles Family Arena.

Butcher, the Steamers' leading scorer, primed himself for the Feb. 29 MISL All-Star Game at the Family Arena by scoring three goals. The 25-year-old All-Star forward now has 24 goals this season, which places him fifth in the league in goals scored. Daryl Doran, who was named to his 13th All-Star Game Feb. 13, added two goals and an assist in the triumph.

The victory marked the second time in 10 days the Steamers (8-15) have scored six goals to defeat the Sockers (11-14); St. Louis defeated San Diego 6-2 Feb. 7 at The Family Arena. The Steamers are now 1.5 games behind Central Division rival Kansas City for the sixth and final MISL playoff spot.

In Monday's Presidents' Day matinee, St. Louis jumped to a 2-0 lead on first-quarter goals by Butcher (seven minutes, 56 seconds), and Doran (9:42). San Diego cut the deficit to 2-1 with a low blast by Mariano Bollella at 10:14 of the first, then tied it 2-2 on a late first-period power play goal by Tony Velazquez. Paul Wright scored on a one-timer off a re-start to give San Diego a 3-2 lead just 1:19 into the second.

However, the Steamers countered with second-quarter goals by Apple (7:19) and Butcher (14:11) to take a 4-3 lead into halftime. Butcher's goal was a power-play rebound tally after the Steamers peppered San Diego All-Star goalkeeper Victor Nogueira with a series of shots. Butcher scored his third of the game at 4:24 of the third quarter to make it 5-3, and Doran completed the scoring with his 11th goal of the season at 5:02 of the third.

The Steamers next play Feb. 20 against the Kansas City Comets at Kemper Arena, before hosting Philadelphia Feb. 21 at 7:05 p.m. at The Family Arena. Following the Philadelphia game, the Steamers break for the Feb. 27-29 All-Star Weekend in St. Louis. The team will have 11 games remaining this season following the All-Star break, beginning with a March 6 game at home against Cleveland.
