February 16, 2004 - Major Indoor Soccer League 2 (MISL 2)
San Diego Sockers News Release

The Sockers' road woes continued Monday afternoon with a 6-3 loss to the Steamers. It was the second time in 10 days that the Sockers have come away empty-handed in St. Louis. After coming from behind to take the lead at 3-2 in the first half, the Sockers were struck with four unanswered goals and were unable to recover. The loss dropped their road record to 2-9 and overall record to 11-14, second in the Western Division.

St. Louis put the pressure on early as Steve Butcher found the back of the net for the first of his game-high three goals at 7:56 of the first quarter. Daryl Doran added a second goal to increase their lead to 2-0 at 9:42. The Sockers responded to the Steamers' quick start with a 3-0 run of their own. Mariano Bollella got things started for the Sockers by putting in his team-leading sixteenth goal at 10:14 off an assist by defender David Beltran. Minutes later, Mauricio Alegre fed Tony Velazquez for his second goal in as many games at 14:11.

In the second quarter, Bollella assisted Paul Wright in getting one past Steamers' goalkeeper Brett Phillips at 1:19 to give the Sockers their first lead of the game. St. Louis fired back with two goals in the period to regain the lead before halftime. Sterling Wescott fed Michael Apple for the tying goal at 7:19 and Butcher put in his second goal of the game at 14:11 with help from Sipho Sibiya.

Butcher gave the St. Louis a 5-3 lead after scoring his hat trick goal off a pass from Doran at 4:24 of the third. Doran added the final nail in the Sockers' coffin at 5:02 off an assist from Franck M'Bemba

The Sockers were scheduled to play in Monterrey this coming Friday, but the game has been postponed due to circumstances beyond the MISL's control. Instead, the Sockers will travel to Kansas City on Saturday, February 21 at 5:35 p.m. (PST) to face the Comets for the third time this season. San Diego has come away victorious in the previous two meetings, both of which were at home. The game can be heard live on ESPN Radio 800 and on the Internet at www.worldtalkradio.com.
