Waterloo Wins Game 1 in First Round Series, 6-4

WATERLOO, Iowa - The Waterloo Black Hawks scored three goals in the second period to pull away from the Tri-City Storm and hang on to win 6-4 in Game 1 of the best-of-three first round series in the 2012 Clark Cup Playoffs. The two teams will play Game 2 Tuesday night back in Young Arena, as the Storm attempt to force a deciding Game 3 Wednesday in Waterloo.

Game 1 started off with four combined goals between the two teams in the first 5:32 in the first period, as each team scored two goals.

The Black Hawks opened the scoring 2:29 into the contest on LW Taylor Cammarata's first of two goals in the game. However, Waterloo's goal was quickly followed up by a Storm goal from C Tim Bonner 28 seconds later from RW Michael Vecchione and D Griffin Foulk.

Following another goal from Waterloo LW Mike Huntebrinker at the 5:08 mark into the first period, the Storm's RW Joshua Henke scored 24 seconds later to tie the game for a second time. LW Jared Linnell and C Nick Lappin assisted Henke's goal.

In the second period, the Black Hawks' LW Jamie Hill, Cammarata and C Tony Cameranesi each scored in a span of 10 minutes beginning at the 8:16 mark in the period. Hill's goal was his first of two in the game, as he scored with the Black Hawks short-handed to lead off the middle period scoring route.

Hill scored again 3:28 into the third period on the power play to push the Waterloo lead to 6-2 before the Storm could respond.

Tri-City scored at the 6:19 mark in the final period, as Lappin would tally his second point of the game on his first-career post-season goal in the USHL. D Kenny Brooks and LW Trevor Moore earned the assists on the Storm's only power-play goal. Brooks played the game as a defenseman due to injuries to begin the playoffs and will continue to play as a blueliner through the first round against Waterloo.

With the Storm goalie pulled in the final 3:35 of regulation, Tri-City D Bryan Sinz scored with 2:45 left in the game after being setup by Linnell and Brooks on the extra-attacker goal. However, that was the closest the Storm would get to Black Hawks Monday night.

G Adam Wilcox (0-1) made 20 saves on 26 shots in his first-career post-season loss for the Storm, while G Stephon Williams (1-0) made 17 saves on 21 shots receiving the win for the Black Hawks in Game 1.

Tri-City finished the game 1-for-3 on the power play, while going 1-for-2 on the penalty kill.

Game 2 between the Storm and Black Hawks is Tuesday night in Waterloo. Classic Hits 98.9 FM will air the with the Viaero Wireless Pre-Game Show starting at 6:45 p.m.

Notes: The Storm's last win in the playoffs was on April 30, 2007 (3-2 win) in Game 7 against Sioux City at the Viaero Event Center. The Storm have lost six-consecutive games in the post season dating back to the 2007 Clark Cup Playoffs. Tri-City's last win in Waterloo was on Oct. 20, 2007 (4-3 OT) and have gone now nine-consecutive (eight in the regular season) games without a win at Young Arena. D Dylan Maller and RW Andrew Dorantes sat out of the game due to injury. The win for Waterloo snapped a 10-game losing streak in the playoffs dating back to the 2008 Clark Cup Finals against Omaha
