Gamblers Pass out Year-End Awards

(Green Bay, WI) -) The Green Bay Gamblers of the United States Hockey League (USHL) passed out their year end awards at the team's banquet. These players were presented with the following awards:

Most Valuable Player - Alex Broadhurst and Nolan LaPorte

Best Offensive Player - Alex Broadhurst

Best Defensive Player - Andy Welinski

Unsung Hero Award - Grant Arnold and C.J. Eick

Community Service Award- Kyle Novak, Peter Maric, Kyle Chatham and Brandon Kirk

At the end of the 2011-12 regular season, Broadhurst led the team in points scored (73) tallying 26 goals and 46 assists. Broadhurst put together a tremendous rookie campaign in 2011, registering 13 goals and 20 assists in 55 games. Broadhurst continued his solid play in the Clark Cup Playoffs, leading the team in scoring with nine points (3 goals & 6 assists). Broadhurst was selected in the 7th round of the NHL Entry Draft by his hometown Chicago Blackhawks. On the international level, Broadhurst was a member the United States Under-18 team that took home the silver medal at the 2010 Ivan Hlinka Memorial Tournament in the Czech Republic and Slovakia. Prior to his time in Green Bay, Broadhurst played his midget hockey for the Chicago Mission. Registering 16 goals and 29 assists, Broadhurst played a key role in guiding the Mission to the 2010 U-18 National Championship.

LaPorte brought his rugged style back to Green Bay for a second tour with the Gamblers. This past regular season Nolan LaPorte led the team in goals scored (36) in 57 games and a plus 35 plus/minus rating. LaPorte also led the league with 16 powerplay goals. In his rookie campaign, LaPorte notched 9 goals, 11 assists and 63 minutes in penalties in 54 games. The Western Michigan recruit registered three goals and five assists in 11 Clark Cup Playoff games. Before being selected by the Gamblers in the 2010 Entry Draft, LaPorte laced up the skates for Team Illinois AAA. In 47 games LaPorte racked up 21 goals and 25 assists in route to lead Team Illinois to the U18 Illinois state championship.

Welinski is touted as one of the top defenseman in the USHL this season. The Duluth, MN native appeared in 54 games in 2011-12, scoring a league-high 15 goals for a defenseman. Welinski was also a part of a defensive core that allowed the least amount of goals for a second consecutive season. In June of 2011, Welinski heard his named called by the Anaheim Ducks (3rd round) at the NHL Entry Draft. Prior to his time in Green Bay, Welinski starred at Duluth East High School. With the Greyhounds, Welinski garnered all-state and all-area honors.

The Gamblers are back at home Saturday April 21st and Sunday April 22nd for Games 1 and 2 of the Clark Cup Eastern Conference Semi-Finals. Saturday night is a Bud Night ($2 24oz Budweisers and Michelob Golden Draft Lights.) Face-off is set for 7:05pm. Sunday is Festival Foods Family Afternoon.
